Shingles Support Group
Herpes zoster, colloquially known as shingles, is the reactivation of varicella zoster virus, leading to a crop of painful blisters over the area of a dermatome. It occurs very rarely in children and adults, but its incidence is high in the elderly (over 60), as well as in any age group of immunocompromised patients.
There is not much a doctor can do while your body goes through the recovery stage. Commonly, the post herpetic neuralgia, that you are experiencing, will linger on for months. Rarely, the PHN will last for years.
It is like cravings, the body ASKS for it's needs.
Famvir, fatigue lasted 3 months. Everytime I had any stress, my shoulders would feel weak. 1 year later (Thanksgiving 2017) I started feeling similar but not as bad as before, but I know it is not normal. And that contributes to the nervousness about it. (and scared)
I spoke briefly with a co-volunteer who had it and she indicated that rest is key
After Holiday break, I will pick her brain for more info.
That being said, I am in my early 50's but in what would be called good shape (per my primary care folks and chiro crew); 6', 175 lbs, excellent blood pressure, etc. Non-smoker and an avid 5K runner. So thinking that the warehouse work (as noted is only part time of my regular day )is completely fatiguing me is hard to accept. I am having trouble even getting in lunch time walks and a run right now is out of the question.
It seems, per convo here, that post-shingles fatigue and muscle pain is more common than expected and it's amazing the health care industry seems to ignore this.
Wish there was something I could do beyond trying to get in some stretching (yoga) and taking ibuprofen more than I like.
Anyone think the shingles shot would help or does that just help deter another breakout?
I finally got to see a doctor and he was not 100% sold that my issue was post shingles, although he did think there was a possibility that it may have triggered another problem. I gave up a bit of blood yesterday so a slew of tests could be done, from lupus, to lyme (had that many years ago) to vitamin deficiencies, etc, etc.
I am trying to be positive but my thoughts are they will find something scary (hope not) or nothing at all. I hope they see something so I can make a recovery plan, but would take nothing over something critical.
