In the UK a footballer is being released from prison after serving 2.5 years of a 5 year sentence for having sex with a girl deemed incapable of giving consent as she was comatose. He is being re-signed by his old club. I find this absolutely disgusting. Yes, he served a two year prison sentence...but his victim will suffer a life long sentence. I find it appalling that his grilfriend, who he had been with for two years prior to the incident, so he cheated on her by doing this, has gone on national television saying that he wouldn't do this, she knows him and he isn't capable of it. Yet he was convicted. Hmmmm.
As a lot of us probably know on this site, getting a case to court is difficult enough, there has to be enough evidence for the police to believe it stands a good chance of being successful. The fact he was convicted...says it all for me.
They have started a website to protest his innocence. They are trying to say that the girl had loose morals, they had witness statements saying as much but they were inadmissable in court. Thank heavens! A person's past has NOTHING to do with something like this. They claim because she could walk in her high shoes, she was sober enough to consent. Personally, I walk better in heels when I've had a drink because I don't think about it as much! They claim that because she remembered she had left her pizza outside, she was of sound mind, even though she left her purse at the take away. Again, when I have had a bit of a night out, I will remember where my food is above all else, but nothing else (I have lost a beautiful coat that way).
I'm so cross on the poor girl's behalf. I don't think this man should be allowed his previous cushty lifestyle and I think his girlfriend needs to wake up to reality. If she understood what the girl had been through, she would think differently.

It is embarassing to be part of a country where people put money above the victims, and for these people to talk bad of the girl its a disgrace, that was someones daughter it happened to. Just shows money comes first huh

If there's a country out there with a more enlightened attitude, I'd like to know about it. I'm in the US and I can't say it's better here, though things are moving in the right direction with a lot of attention being paid to campus rape lately, and some states adopting laws that there has to be positive, explicit consent for sexual activity. And then there are a lot of countries where things are way worse, in proportion to the degraded, dis-empowered status of women. Women and children.
