I had really bad flashbacks for about 3 weeks after she dropped the D-bomb out of the blue. They were flashes of all sorts of things: things I did wrong, things I did right, things that never happened, and mostly just everyday things with her or in the house or in the life I thought I'd be living. The worst things were what I call the anti-nightmares, i.e. short dreams in which everything was fine, or in which I somehow said some special words that magically fixed everything. These lasted about 5-10 seconds and of course they were so intense that they woke me up immediately. At the worst point they happened continuously every 3-5 minutes during the night, so I basically did not sleep for 2 to 3 weeks. After almost 2 months I still have flashbacks constantly, but they're a lot less intense and a lot more manageable now. They're also a lot less frequent.
so in general I can promise you that it first gets less miserable, then the nightmares and anti-nightmares stop, then the flashbacks get less frequent and intense. And then it all gets better (life does, I mean), and then I'm told that later it gets a lot better (I'm still working on that one, but I honestly think they've told me the truth, I can see it getting a lot better within the next few months).
That's the bit of my story that you can probably relate to. You're not alone in this, what you're experiencing is common, maybe even normal (at least for people with overly creative or active minds, and right now I don't mean that as a virtue, ha!).
As the others say, you can share anything you want here. People go from extremely vague to overly graphical. We tolerate and actually welcome pretty much anything in here (except intolerance and rudeness), as long as it's clear that you're grieving. Don't feel you have to censor your feelings to us. Don't feel you have to share them either, but if you think it will help, we're right here with you and for you =)
