because it is a Memory Snapshot 1 picture you have something soild to work on
try to imagine an eraser rubbing it out
so it becomes a white page
and keep working on that it does help over time
it also gets you out of that image emotionly
being at a distance erasing it gives you a distraction
it worked for me
hope that helps someone else
The super fast run down of what happend is that i was 6. I am a male and my abuser was a male of about 14. I was forced into giving oral sex. I have the whole thing written out in my journal.
The snapshot is of him putting his hand on my head, and his eyes rolling back in pleasure. That is so humilliating. this is what is tearing me apart right now. if there ever were a source of anger in me that would be it. but the worst part of it is that in my dream, my adult self is the abuser and my child self is still the abused. and i see the scene from both perspectives. I woke up shaking. part of me wants to just forget the whole damn thing, but thats what i've been doing for the past 30 years. i am just now dealing with it. I just need to face it somehow, but it seems to be controlling me in stead.
I hope your therapist can give you some ideas on how to neutralize this image. The memory will be there, but maybe you can get to that point where you don't have dreams or get physically sick about it anymore. I think these memories are especially strong now because you're facing the abuse after repressing it for years. With time and healing, it can start to have less power over you. That's how it's been with me. I wish you the best with your session.
