Okay, For you ladies out there, I want to get on birthcontrol for womanly issues, but they want me to get an exam. And To be honest I'm seriously terrifyed of those, one because Ive never had one and two, I'm afriad its gonna bring back alot of unwanted memories, and I'm extremely uncomfortable with people touching me, like almost ot the point I like faint. Any Advice. I havent really opened up about my abuse much, and I'm like really scared cause this needs to be done but i cant bring myself the courage to make the appointment.

I had and have that problem too cause of the past abuse. What I did is I told my doctor about it (not in detail) and he was very understanding. There was a nurse in with us and she held my hand as he quickly did what he needed to do. Be honest with your doctor and even get a female doctor if you need to. They usually are very caring and understanding; sometimes I also need to take ativan to calm me down before an exam. I was also sodomized so they gave me propovol (to make me sleep) during the colonoscopy. Not pleasant but easier on me and everyone else involved.

Exams in and of themselves are nothing to be afraid of. They don't hurt. They can bring back memories, but like Bibiane said, be honest with your doctor and they will do their best to help you out. There will be a nurse in the room, especially if it's a male doctor. Have faith in yourself, you CAN do this.

A friend of mine would not get an exam after she was molested by her gyno. She had cerviical cancer.

I had the same exact problem before my first exam. I found a female dr. (cause my abuser was male). When I called to make the appt. I asked to speak with the nurse, explained my situation to her and the day of the appt. wasnt a big deal. The experience is so clinical compared to the abuse...didnt bother me at all. The nurse and the dr were wonderful and the only mention of my abuse was simply...when your ready to deal with that, we can help.
It changed my life,honestly, I didnt realize that the female type issues I was having seemed to constantly keep my abuse in the for-front. I needed to feel normal, getting help from the gyno helped me feel that way.

I also had a real problem with that also. However, it helped that I worked in a doctor office and know it is required to have a female present if a male doctor does exam. For the reasons of past sexual abuse, I chose to change doctors and now go to females. I was upfront about my sexual abuse so they will be sensitive and emphathic to my issues. I knew I need the exam to get my pills and mentally prepared myself as I knew it was a physical exam and not sexual. It is something I had to emotionally and mentally prepare for. It was not (easy), but necessary. Doctors need to know our history so they can better serve and treat. Hope this helps : )
