Their job is to hear the gunk in our heads so we can get it out, right?
I can relate to feeling like 'I shouldn't'. I first talked to a counsellor when I was 23. I felt like I was betraying my dad to talk of his alcoholism.
All the very best with your therapy, would be interested to hear how it went.
I just recently spoke to my therapist for the first time about being sexually abused, and I had been seeing her for -years-... My experience was overwhelming emotionally and physically... I felt like I was going to puke and have a panic attack at one point. She was the first person I ever told about it, and I'm glad that I did. I've been struggling to cope with the aftermath, the memories.... But I'm glad that I did in the end, even if it means more struggle. I'm glad that I can work through my feelings with her.
I think you should do what you want- talk to your therapist when -YOUR'RE- ready and you know that you can trust them. They need to be a safe person for you. I hope that you can get the help and support you need. If you want somebody to talk to who's going through something similar, message me. :)
Then I was asked what happened to me. I physically couldn't make the words. The movie of it kept rolling in my head, but something in me didn't want to say any of it.
Keeping it in your head allows you to face it only so much. You can dissociate yourself from it. Putting it into words makes it real. Forces you to face it.
btw, I still haven't told anyone the details. I'm getting there.
That I get. Might try writing it out and giving it to your therapist?
Or talk about one aspect that's easier?
I had a hard time talking, too...it took me having a "Nervous Breakthrough..." As in I was just mentally coming off the rails...O.o
Gee, I'm not being encouraging here, am I?
...Don't try THIS at home, kids...
Yeah...it feels like I'm pulling the words out of myself painfully when I talk about it, like I'm pulling the words out of my flesh, as if they are imbedded in my guts or something.
