am I a coward

I had a appointment at the doctors this morning about something different, but i was going to bring up that i sexually abused when i was a child, but i was a coward i backed out when he asked me if there was anything else that i was concern or worried about. Why couldnt i tell my doctor what has happened me i am such a coward i just dont know what to do now and advise on this would be helpful.

Its hard to tell someone like that, in that kind of authority whether you are too old for them to call the cops or not, what happened to you. the first person i told was my friend C.C. (initials cuz i want to protect her, ya know) and she went and told the dept. of child and family services after i started calling her every night for a week. I was furious with her for doing so, but now I'm so happy someone had the guts to do what I couldn't. You aren't a coward for not telling him. It's something we as victims do to protect ourselves, if we don't tell, no one knows, and you don't get it used against you.

Hi Star - i physically couldn't tell my doctor about the abuse either, so i wrote a letter giving brief details and virtually shoved it at him when i next went. I knew i couldn't say those words, but had to communicate somehow. I took the letter back when he had finished reading it. It is so difficult making that step, but so worth it. If i hadn't wrote that letter, i expect i would still be in the state i was in before, or dead.

Hi thanks for your replys it means alot something I forgot to put in my post is that when I went to the doctors yesterday he told me he wanted me to have a smear test done and I am terrified of just the thought of someone touching me down there I just don't what to I have had one done before but I just don't what to do

hon, don't beat yourself up. It takes time to feel comfortable talking about abuse. Unless you are currently in danger, take your time and figure out who actually needs to know. If you are still in the abusive situation, find SOMEONE in authority you can confide in, and get the ball rolling to remove you from that danger. Hugs.

Hi Star, first of all you are not a coward!. It can be really hard to make the break and talk about something as horrifying as abuse. This is a major trauma to go through and not easy to broach, especially hard to tell family etc . I can identify with this as I was raped and abused as as a child and did not tell anybody until I was 19 because for some reason I felt ashamed. I still find it painful to talk about but I no longer feel the shame which I used to feel. Hon have you thought about maybe seing a specialist Psychologist who deals with sexual abuse, or seeing if there are any support groups in your area. This may help you!.
Anyways I want to stress again that you are not a coward. You have been through a very traumatic experience and its understandable that you find it hard to talk about.
