OT for Independant Eval

I am requesting an independant eval from the School for my sons OT needs. I am still new to this and wonder what, exactly, am I to look for in an OT. Obviously, I would consider someone who has been in this specialty for some time and more exposure to all levels/severitys of SID. Is there anything else I should look for?

If that is not the zillion $$ question, I don't know what is!

First get the letter request to the school. The should have a list of "approved vendrs" that they will provide a contract so you have no exspense other that getting there and your time involved. Then from the list interview the therapist and determine if they are informed about SID and can they fairly evaluate your child. You may need to ask around for references. I hard a terrible getting OT for my kid because many ot are NOT educated in sensory dysfunction. You may ask an educational attorney's office who they would refer since they are the ones in the trenches to get the kids rightful services.

I agree with Olismom. I think it is important that you ask around, one of your friends may know an OT who is great at SID. Since OT covers such a broad range of impairment it is important that you find one who is knowledgeable in SID.

I think it is very important that you find an OT that has excessive knowledge with SID. The therapist has to be educated to better help you and the school meet the needs of your child!! My son has two therapists and they are great!! Without there guidence and understanding i'm not sure what level of undertanding my son I would be at. The ot should know when to push your child but not overboard. The OT should be able to direct you and your child in helping with tantrums, deep pressure, environment, sounds, textures etc. If the Ot can't answer all your question in depth, than he/she probably is not the best candidate to help.
