I finally felt well enough to give my mom some insight about what's going on with me. For once I felt like she wasn't judging me so I felt somewhat more comfortable than I usually do. Anyways she asked me the question "What are you thinking when you cut?" At first I didn't really answer her, I said I don't know, because really I don't know. It's like all my thoughts disappear and I guess that's why I cut, so my thoughts would disappear. I told her cutting makes me forget about my mental pain, and has me worrying about my physical pain so I cut so I don't have to hurt mentally. Sometimes I'd rather be hurting physically than mentally. But I guess if it was a fight between which pain is worse, physical or mental, none of the two would win.
Sorry about the rambling, anyways hearing that question made me stop and I had to think about it. What do I think when I cut? What's going on in my head? Those are kind of hard to answer, does anyone have an answer?

I'm not really thinking about anything when I cut. I just focus on the cutting. So really cutting is all I am thinking about when I cut.

When I cut, I just want to feel something different than what I'm feeling...usually to escape the mental pain.It makes me feel numb

I understand how you feel. For me, it is usually overthinking things what would bring me down to the point where I start crying A LOT and I need to cut. But when my boyfriend asks me what triggered it... I just don't know. My thoughts rush from topic to topic, I don't remember the specifics, but the relief feels so real.

Thank you all this helps me understand some of it, I guess we either think of nothing, or we think of too much :/ thoughts...I wish thoughts would hurt less, people say sticks and stones can break your bones, but words don't hurt, I don't think that's true. If thoughts can make people hurt so much, words are more painful. Life is really confusing, I'm glad there are people who have found peace with it.

Yep. Both words and physical violence can hurt you. Life is full of BS.

You described my own thoughts on it pretty well. If I have to feel pain, I prefer to be able to see the source of it, to know that I caused it and to believe that I have control over it.
