thats really interesting, while i was on risperdal i put on about 55 pounds (which I'm still struggling to lose.) am watching my weight very carefully now i'm on zyprexa. thanks for the info :)

One of our members asked if this was available now or was still experimental.
Metformin (Glucophage) is generic and is absolutely available for this purpose so ask your doc about it if curious

I used to take both clozaril and zyprexa and weighed 260lbs. I now take abilify and geodon and watch what I eat and weigh 166lbs. I do notice that my appetite is not as large on geodon and abilify as it was on the other two. I personally like geodon and ablilify better also.

This is GREAT News! I had read about Glucophage being used along with Anti-Psychotics to help control weight gain.

I am on Seroquel for PTSD, and have gained 40lbs since April '07. It's distressing to me.

I read somewhere that there is a connection between high blood sugar and schiz. It said back in the day they would put patients into insulin shock believing it would help. I am currently on 500 of metformin. I will ask my doc to get the 750 though.

I once went from a size 10 or 12 to a size 16 in 2 months. 3 years later i went from a size 10 to 14 or 16 in a few months and until it was pointed out to me by a friend on Orlanzapine that this awas the cause i just thought i was eating too much. In London we have a healthy eating group for people with weight gain due to mental health drugs or other mental health issues and thi shelped alot. What gets on my nerves is that it took me 2 years of moaning to my psychiatrist before he would change my meds. S o i didn,t take them regularly which obviously wasn't very conducive. I founf Resperadone and healthy eatingmean and going gym,walking means i can loose say between 1 pound and 3 pond a week. Thats all out of the window now though because i am medication free and 32 weeks pregnant. Thaak Almighty i am over withdrawal and will be putting my medication into my hospital bag. I have done alot of research during this pregnancy and found a sight in Australia i think which calls schizophrenia a psycho spiritual experience. When i am ill or relapsing i am fighting my self, Satan and seeking Almighty Lord.

However say if you were already considering it or are not on meds but suffering then go to this site. I now take mw]herbs which are not very effective but have seen slow improverments. Still miss my meds though.

Oh i would rather be plump and sain than skinny and off my head. Mental Health comes before weight for me even though weight gets me down because u am nrmally skinny and nice now i am plump and pleased.

Thank you for telling me. I will ask my pdoc about Metformin, geodon and ablify. I'm currently taking Zyprexa and battling my weight. So this is very good news.

thank you so much for giving me some hope. Ive previously been on zyprexa gained loads of weight and didnt work great for me then seroquel which worked well but made me eat and eat, more recently been on Clozaril for 2.5 years but i stopped just recently because by far the worst for wgt gain. My doctor doesnt know yet but will soon when they get this months blood result levels. I am still on abilify but the running commentary is starting again. I dont know if the drug you mentioned is available in Ireland but i will look into it. Thanks Dr O
