I don't believe you need to contact the airlines beforehand, but you would need to present it to security when you're going through. You can carry it on the plane. When I was on Enbrel or Humira, I had a small cooler that I would pack the meds in to travel. Just pack the meds with a bunch of long-lasting ice packs and they should stay cool enough through the trip, since the airplane is climate controlled.

I have traveled with biologic medication. I pack it in a small cooler in my carry-on. I also have a used needle container and my Rx in the carry-on. I get pulled over for inspection slightly more than 50% of the time. Don't forget your ice paks!

I traveled with Kineret a daily needle. As long as there is a prescription, you can take those deadly needles on the plane with you. (Sorry for the bad sense of humor)

My husband bought me an AC/DC beer fridge to carry a six pack. It was perfect for traveling in the car and on the plane. I plugged it in on stop overs, but I also put a freezer pack in with the biologic. Just be prepared to answer questions from the other passengers. I would always say, "It's my fridge, but I didn't bring the kitchen sink." Good luck.

Thanks for the tips. Does dry ice, ice packs, or gel keep things cooler for a longer period? Have any of you traveled with a biologic for a longer international flight?
If you have a cooler you particularly like and wouldn't mind sharing the name or a link to it, I'd appreciate it. Considering that I will be in Korea for nearly a year, I want to keep things as compact as possible.

I use a soft side lunch type cooler. I purchased a small refridgerator thermometer to put inside so I can monitor the temp. I place my meds in a ziplock plastic bag so they don't get wet from condensation or an ice pack leaking. I place a group of refreezable ice packs in the cooler. I carry two additional zip locks. If the cooler temp gets above 44 degrees I fill one of the spare bags with ice and add that to the cooler. When that ice bag is partially melted I fill the second bag and add it. When the first bag is mostly melted I take that bag and empty it so when I need it filled with ice it is ready and not dripping into the cooler prior. Have a great trip. I can travel for a full day or longer with this method.

I have traveled with Humira years ago where I had to take separate needles because I drew it up. I had a letter from my doctor stating I had RA and needed the syringes and medication for that purpose. The other advice about dry ice i correct. There ae even freezer bags that are specially made to keep items cold for a long time. They can be folded and placed in an insulated bag with ice and you should not have any problems. Thanks all for the advice. I'll be sure to ask the Dr tomorrow for the letter to accompany me on the flight. I will look for a small, but portable cooler at the store. Which do you prefer - dry ice or ice packs? Where does one get dry ice?

Enbrel sent me a travel cooler. I had an episode where the Enbrel was accidentally warmed. I only had the one pen with me so I didn't know if it was okay to take or not so I called Enbrel Support and the nurse there told me it was fine if they reached room temp, that'd they'd even be okay to take for up to two days even if kept at room temp. Of course they prefer it be chilled but I'm telling you this in case they do warm up, you don't have to panic. I'd call your biologic support nurse and double check on all of this.

Thanks Suera. I got the soft cooler pack from the Dr. today. I asked the nurse about dry vs. reg ice packs and she wasn't sure which was better. It is reassuring to hear from you that even if the meds do get slightly warmer, it doesn't necessarily mean I have to throw them away. How does one tell if it should be thrown away?
