Rheumatoid Arthritis Support Group
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, inflammatory, multisystem, autoimmune disorder. It is a disabling and painful condition which can lead to substantial loss of mobility due to pain and joint destruction. The disease is also systemic in that it often also affects many extra-articular tissues throughout the body including the skin, blood vessels, heart, lungs, and...
If you are able to do some kind of aerobics, like walking, swimming or biking, then go for it. If your disease it not under control, then you might want to wait.
What you definitely do not want to do is use a joint that is actively flaring - hot, hurting and red. I did that with my thumbs one year, picking rocks around my raised garden beds, and my thumbs are ruined. I have to wear special thumb caps to use them at all.
I think when you are told not to exercise, that is what they are talking about - do not overuse an actively flaring joint!
Best advise I received on exercising is just start walking. I know walking seems boring or mundane but it actually helps A LOT! At least for me it did.
But do keep in mind that yes "overdoing it" can creep up on you to. What I go through a lot is questioning, "Is this gym or RA related....or both...or neither"?? LOL! It can drive a person nuts but we all get that "hyper awareness" at one point or another & it can get tiring!
Good luck on you exercise path!
You'll find your balance.
