What does it mean when you have a high sed rate? Mine was 24 ...I just had another blood test and my Rhumy called but I missed it, so have to wait until Monday but I am assuming that it is another high sed rate...What would cause it to be high? Thanks

If I understand it correctly, sed rate measures the amount of inflammation in your body, blood. Do you have a high RF factor as well??

I have no idea what the RF factor is.. I see nothing on the lab sheet with those initials

A high sed rate means you have active inflammation in the body, maybe your not on meds yet or theyre not working or your in a flare or have an infection. From myexperience Drs only look at the RF during diagnosis, it stands for rheumatoid factor but it is kind of an unreliable test because a healthy person can have a high RF because of a cold or infection or whatever.

Thank you,, I am in a flare right now..I have been for the last 2 weeks...I have been having pain where I never had pain before...even my one heel is bad. This certainly keeps you on your toes...You just never know where it will hit next...

Sed rate is the short name for the lab test known as a ESR: erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Sometimes it's listed as ESR on lab results. Hope that helps.

Another maker of inflammation which you will pobably find on your blood test results is CRP (C Reactive Protein) , The normal for sed rate is 1 - 35. At dx mine was 177 and has only been below 35 once in 16 months.

Angelpuss my crp says normal is 0.800 mg/dl mine is 0.070

the sed rate is normal 0-20 mm/hr and mine is 24

called this a.m. and they said my liver function is high.. but could not tell me the results as they could not get it to load in the computer... said it could be from the 2 glasses of champaign I had 3 days before the blood test.. (had a 50th anni. party to go to.).. and it probably was due to the mtx I am injecting.

Remember that Sed rate is not the golden way of telling what is going on. My sed rate has never been really high even when I was in such terrible shape. Go figure. Hugs Charlie

A good rule of thumb is that normal sed rate is age divided by 2 for men, (age + 10) divided by 2 for women. Not sure of your age, but for me a sed rate of 24 would still be considered normal (I am 45).
