Most assuredly! And when my RA doc told me that he prescribed the prednisone so that I could manage it, dosing up or down as I feel I needed it, he mentioned to my husband that HE would know when I got too much as I would be irritable... lol. And it is exactly that way... irritable, cranky and mean-spirited.

Now you have my peek at this funky medication... can't live with it, can't live without it... hahaha.

i had to stop prednisone it made my mood very excited and moody up and down mood swings .....i have weaned my self off and yes i had flare ups during my not taking as much. i do feel great now my doctor said to weam off slowely ......

Yes; euphoria, depresion, aggitation, and irritability are all well documented side effects of prednisone. While it pushed me into euphoria, after three days without sleep I crashed into a severe, aggitated depression. My irritability was so bad I became concerned I would clobber someone. Alas prednisone is a drug I will never take again (it never helped my RA anyway, even though I was on it for 6 months). However there are those who can tolerate the drug without the emotional side effects...lucky them.

oh yes, but every time they try to ween me off i can only get down to 2mgs before I start having a flare. They just increased mine again because I went off Leflunamide had allergic reaction and started Humira injections.

OMG... yes this med makes me crazy. Very anxious and depressed, but the mood swings are intolerable. I wish you luck.

Yes. Like a ROLLER COASTER of emotions. Not a fun ride for anyone around me either.

Well- at high doses I loved the way it made me feel so good and alert and energetic. However I hated how I could not sleep, had night sweats and ate like a friggin pig. My husband said it made me combative- but I didn't think so.I think he was just doing things that piss me off and I had a normal reaction. I hated sporting a mustache and porkchops :(
On lower doses- I still ate like a pig, had stubborn weight, a bloated stomach...
I'm glad I'm off and hope I never have to go back on.

Oh yeah it does! I was on it for respiratory problems not my RA and I was a HUGE you-know-what...it's completely normal

I thought you had heard my story? I was diagnosed bipolar, a few years after I was put on prednisone for asthma. So I was taking all these meds, for bipolar, to say nothing of not just prednisone orally, but nasally, on the skin for eczema, and for the lungs. Then I was put on it for RA continuously.

I finally read somewhere that prednisone causes mood swings in normal people. Then I starting connecting the dots. When did my mood swings start? When I was put on prednisone. I thought it was because I was upset because I was sick. So I got on a biologic and totally off all cortisone drugs. It took two years to get off the anti-psychotics, but I have no need for them now. I feel like I am young and stable, emotionally again.

I am sure I have posted on this repeatedly. I am a member of the bipolar forum, and have met more people with mood disorders who are on prednisone for auto-immune issues. I think if you are actually going to die without it, like after a severe asthma attack, it is probably necessary, but as a long term treatment for RA, it is not the right thing to do.

Don't depend on getting the flares under control with prednisone. All you are doing is reducing inflammation, and disguising the flare, which is damaging the joints underneath. Demand better meds, and you will be amazed at how much better you feel. But it may take a long time to stabilize.

Another resounding YES to add to the group. I cannot take prednisone because it makes me hyper and makes me an insomniac which ultimately is depressing. I didn't want to try biologics and when I agreed to, I infactically told my rhuemy that if I choose the biologic route to never offer prednisone as a treatment, even for a short burst! It helps with pain and inflammation, but at least for me is not worth the crazy insomniac state it puts me in. Unfortunately you cannot stop it cold turkey, that would make things worse for you. Talk to your doctor and see what they can recommend. Lastly, you need to weigh and make the fnal decision if it has helped you enough that you can tolerate the mood swings. It is a very personal decision only you can make. Just know you aren't crazy, yes, the prednisone can make you that way! Good luck. marcia

Yep definitely have to agree with everyone else on this one. I feel at times like I'm a paranoid, controlling person. One minute happy then depressed then crying.

When I get really really bad I will take a dosepack and every time I swear never again...,

Thanks, everyone for your answers. After all your input and taking to my GP (PCP) today, I feel validated on blaming the meds, and not me.
