Well , I have many of them now...I am not sure how to answer because what I thought were RA nodules, my rheumie , just the other day when I pointed out several new ones on my knuckles, he said those are not RA, those are regular arthritis.
I did not ask him much after that comment other than to let him know I was surprised to hear that. He was in the middle of copious notes at the time, and I figure I will ask him next time to explain more. I have both osteo and rheumatoid arthritis. Oh, I just remembered, after he said that, I did ask him which kind it was , that prevents me from making fists anymore........again ,he said "the regular arthritis". ( I can't close my fingers all the way to the palm of hands. Especially my ring fingers , and middle fingers..and ,well , just noticed my pointer finger , also is getting to be that way. Bottom line, I have nearly zero dexterity since I cannot pinch fingers or close hands. As far as nodules go, all conversations I have had with my RA doc and other docs, they all generally are not concerned about it at all. I don't think you need to be , either. I realize it is hard to get used to the idea of it all . But I mean to let you know it is not a sign of imminent scary stuff. Hope that made sense and helps ease your mind somewhat.
when I looked on the Arthritis Foundation website several years ago, I learned there is an outstanding amount of different types of arthritis. It is not just one or two types. Can't say for sure but I seem to recall it being hundreds maybe.

I'm dealing with the same thing. One thing I'd suggest is to photograph your hands weekly, against the same background. (I do it right here at the computer table). Do different angles if you feel it will better show the damage, but be consistent. Try for the same lighting if you can - my weird joint bump is red, and I think that's relevant, and if it gets more or less red, I want there to be clear evidence of it. Save the photos in a file. I think that the rheumatologists have to interpret a lot of subjective feedback from patients, and appreciate something really objective like this - mine now asks if I have the photo file every time I go in, and she'll scan through them. There is a noticeable change over time. It may not seem like much, but at least I feel that I'm taking a step that will be helpful, you know? Good luck to you.

I had three nodules on my right index finger pad, and 1 on my little finger pad. I think they are from playing an open hole flute, as nodules are related to excess use or pressure. I also have really bad milia on my face, from RA, although my rheumatologist disagrees. He is wrong, this time.

Since I started mthx last September the smallest one on my index finger has disappeared, and the one on my pinkie is smaller, but not gone. The milia are almost gone, and they were really big last summer - like a severe case of acne, except they were like nodules, not related to the pores on the skin.

I also had a big nodule on the left pinkie finger knuckle till 2010. That was the year I switched to Rituxan, and it knocked the nodules flat. But mthx has also gotten rid of them. Various other biologics did not help at all.

I do hope the mthx will slowly get rid of the ones on my right index finger. It is such a pain to open things or do any kind of fine work with the two remaining nodules. On the other hand, I am getting much better at using other fingers to do the work the index finger used to do.

Nodules are an annoyance and with the milia, they did damage my appearance. Not that I am very vain. And really, only my daughter pointed it out! LOL

I've read that MTX can either increase or decrease the nodules. Helpful, right? When I was on higher doses of MTX, I did notice that I'd get them more. Since I am just on 3 pills now, I haven't had any. When I would ask the Dr about them, if they bothered me, he would give me a shot & they'd go away. I've had them on the ball of my foot & on a couple knuckles, but on the inside of my hand. I had one on the back of my ankle that he wouldn't inject because it was too close to the tendon, but even that one eventually went away.
