mouth sores, MTX and travel

After almost 5 months on MTX I have developed mouth sores. Just a few, and very small, but they hurt like hell! I recently traveled and the jetlag definitely flared up my RA symptoms... Maybe that is a factor.
I have tried orajel, baking soda and only get 5 minutes of relief. Any suggestions?

Are you also taking folic acid to help counter the side effects ( like mouth sores)? If you are, you might want to discuss with your Dr as you might need to take a higher dose.
If you are not, you may also need to discuss with your dr as to why they didn't add that to your treatment plan.

I find that with the higher doses of folic acid that I take I do not have the problems with the mouth sores or hair loss.

My rheumy gave me a mouthwash that seems to work when the sores are getting out of hand. It numbed the area. Ask your doc. I was lucky been on mtx for 2 years and just recently increased dosage, that's when the mouth sores started. Trish

These remedies for sore mouths and or MTX caused ulcers should give you some relief.

Script- triamcinolone oral paste

Leucovan (script) also helps with other MTX side effects

Orajel antiseptic sore mouth rinse

Toothpaste without laurel sulfate e.g. Pronamel by Sensodyne

.This is a home remedy which is supposed to help but I haven't tried it, as yet.
Mix equal parts of Mylanta and Benedryl, swish in your mouth or dab sores with a q-tip, but DO NOT SWALLOW!!!! Do this at least three times a day. Not only does the combination act as a numbing medication, but it quickly clears up the ulcers. You can also put it on mosquito bites, nose sores, and acne! It really does work!

Good luck - I know how sore and wretched these mouth ulcers are.

I have had canker sores my entire life - since I was four anyway, so I have tried a lot of stuff over the decades. I love, love, love Peroxyl. It is a mouth wash sold just about everywhere. Some places even sell a generic. It works overnight, to some extent. Good luck!
