Rheumatoid Arthritis Support Group
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, inflammatory, multisystem, autoimmune disorder. It is a disabling and painful condition which can lead to substantial loss of mobility due to pain and joint destruction. The disease is also systemic in that it often also affects many extra-articular tissues throughout the body including the skin, blood vessels, heart, lungs, and...
I chose to think on the bright side....it didn't take forever to blow dry.
Hair is important to lots of people. I get it. But I'd rather be able to walk and be bald than to sit in a wheelchair with a full head of hair.
So I started on mthx 4 weeks ago. I noticed hair falling out again. But what can I say? The flares are better! I wish it was not a choice, but for me being well trumps a full head of hair. Sigh!
I have heard others say the same about Biotin.
I also talked to a really good hair dresser about Nioxin. She said it was well known it didn't stop hair loss. She said there is one prescription medicine my doctor could give me, and that would help, at great cost. I was moving in 2 weeks so I passed on it. Maybe something for me to look into, if I can stay on mthx. More liver tests today - we will see.
MTX thinned out my hair, no doubt. But you have to prioritize stuff. Getting BB the disease under control is more important. I'd go bald just to have movement.
Reframe it: think of how much time you save blow drying your hair!
Have you discussed a biologic?
By disrupting and destroying these cells, the disease actually stops. Not everyone responds to the same biologics, but if mthx is not enough, it can work synergistically with the mthx, with a better outcome than either mthx or the biologic itself. Thus, a biologic is an excellent tool to stop RA in its tracks, with good outcomes. I have been on all the above except Humira. I had very good response to Kineret and mthx, whereas neither was enough on its own. Orencia is also beginning to work well, now that I have added mthx to the mix. The other ones I had mixed success with.
Maybe someone can add something more?
PS. Biotin really has helped stop my hair falling out, but I will still take being bald over having RA pain and deformities.
