do you already take Tylenol and some type of NSaid? I know the pain you speak of - but the only way I know to quell mine if Tylenol and something like advil don't cut it, is to take a small dose of prednisone.
Does your doctor keep you with a small amount of prednisone for these situations?

My hip pain doesn't hurt like that. It's deep in the crease of the upper thigh but doesn't travel down the legs to the knees. I do have edema in my inner thigh muscles but the pain tends to stay there & doesn't travel. It's a deep throbbing pain that has been bad enough to keep me from walking some days.

I tend to think if its moving down your legs it would more likely be coming from your low back area rather than your hips. My lumbar pain travels down my legs to my little toes. If the pain meds aren't working have you tried something to relax the muscles or an anti-inflammatory? That may help especially if it's spasms or inflammation.

Thanks for everyone's thoughts. I am unable to take NSAIDS, was on them for quite a while and then started to develop an ulcer. Went off, took high dose acid reflux meds to heal up, tried again and then same thing happened. Dr. says no more NSAIDS for me ever! Tylenol helps slightly, along with hydrocodone but sometimes still doesn't bring it down to an acceptable level for me so I just have to wait until bedtime and hope it's gone by morning. I DO have back troubles, right now suffering quite a bit with L5-S1 facet arthritis, I have considered that this is causing the leg pain too but wanted to bounce it off some of you folks. Yes I do have some prednisone on hand and have considered trying that.

I hurt my back years ago, and aggravated nerves. I think it was L4-5 and S1 area. Since it was a worker's comp thing, the Drs were butts about it, so they never really told me much. I referred to a dermatome map to figure it out myself, I had pain and burning in weird places on my legs daily, sometimes the tops of my thighs, sometimes calves. Sometimes it felt like my foot was under a heater. It was all nerves. Prednisone always helped, and Ultram was a great pain controller. Hydrocodone was useless.

I"m just wondering if you have good arteries in those areas? Somethnig partly blocked?

I get terrible aching in my legs, and it's the whole leg. It's definitely inflammation related, becuase it goes away when I'm on prednisone. I wonder if it's vasculitis? The whole leg hurts, even the skin.

I guess I will have to bite the bullet and take some prednisone to see if that helps. Just found out today my interventional pain mgmt doctor is out for a few weeks so I will have to hope that helps. Probably gonna end up with an MRI and hopefully an injection in my back if she feels this is the cause of my leg pain. I can't stand for ANY length of time it seems like :-(

yours in top of thigh pain tonight. AND I had a cortisone injection in the same side hip today. must be a leg night. it includes spasms also. going to be an interesting night :)

OK so the spasms at the top of the thigh continued all night so I am kind of tip toeing (literally) down the hall with that side of the leg turned in (trying to abort further spasms by walking weird) - the muscle relaxer did not stop them during the night. it's top of the thigh over towards the hip and bursa area where they injected. I don't want to call the office, i am going to try a heating pad on the area at the dentist waiting room where my son is going. that should look good in the waiting room.
