Aanother interesting article on gum disease and RA.
http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=101180
"...All the participants were taking traditional DMARDs for rheumatoid arthritis such as methotrexate, Plaquenil, Arava, and Azulfidine, and half were also taking a biologic therapy such as Enbrel, Humira, or Remicade.
After six weeks, the researchers noted improvement in disease severity and level of an inflammation marker in people who got periodontal therapy.
The study concludes that "Non-surgical periodontal therapy had a beneficial effect on signs and symptoms of RA, regardless of the medications used to treat this condition...."
I know that quitting smoking made a huge difference in my gum trouble. After 6 months my gums were much better and so was my RA. My tendonitis went away... no change in meds!
Break out that floss people and buy some good mouthwash!

Very interesting article, thank you for sharing. I just finished a corse of Periodontal treatment and my gums feel much better. I don't notice a difference in the rA per say, but my mmouth does feell better and it is a good preventative measure to ensure healthy teeth and keeping your own teeth for a longer time.

I'm part way through having 14 cavities filled that showed up in last 6 months since last check-up. DDS says from dry mouth while I'm sleeping, common for folks taking opiates of any kind.May try to get off Opana.RX'd super-fluoride toothpaste and mouthwash, which burn because I have mouth ulcers from Methotrexate. Many of us have mouth problems, it seems! I now have 5 prescriptions just for my mouth! Crazy.

I just wanted to say that my dentist recommended sonic care to brush my teeth. I put out the money and I say it really helps with plaque build up that you cant reach if you're having a bad hand day. I also use the prethreaded with floss long handled toothbrush thingies to floss my teeth. Really helps getting in the back where I can't always reach. Im always told I have hardly any plaque now. But I still hate going to the dentist with a passion and somtimes I dont get in there for over a year. So this helps me out.
