Gabapentin is "NEURONTIN" search for Neurontin and make up your mind. Neurontin manufacturers and sales people were sued for marketining it as a "pain control" drug. It is a anti-convulsive or epilepsy drug. I will give you a more direct answer if you message me.

It is a bad bad bad drug. And bad doctors prescribe it for pain control which it is not.

I take gabapentin for pain related to shingles, neuropathy. It does help. Just my two cents.

I've taken Neurontin for MS...for the nerve issues. I took it for about 2 years...at a dosage of 3 pills x 3 times a day. When I weened off (you must ween off) I started experiencing some flutter feeling in my head. It was really weird. The neuro ordered an EEG and it showed "something" of a seizure type thing. He never did find a real name for it. However...after about 6 months of being off the Neurontin it completely went away. Both the neuro and I believed it was tied to coming off the drug.

I've taken it for tinnitus, it did nothing for that or ra pain.

I take it for nerve pain, and I think it really helps. I am curious about TC's comment above about it being a bad bad bad drug - could you elaborate a bit? I really try not to read TOO much online - just enough to be informed. There is a fine line, IMHO, between being informed and scaring the pants off yourself, otherwise I would just google.

I took it briefly for shingles nerve pain. It really helped for that. Did nothing for fibro or RA pain.

My experience with Gabapentin was that it did help with pain and especially with sleep. However, after a few days I started having bad mood swings and bouts of rage that are not me at all. Scared me and I quit taking it.

It can be a dangerous drug and you must carefully wean yourself off of it. I didn't like that it messed with my brain.

My mother has taken it for years to deal with neuropathy caused by very severe osteoarthritis in her spine. It helps her pain a lot but I have to monitor her to make sure she takes it everyday without missing a dose. Otherwise she gets depressed and has pain.

I think that everyone is different. A lot of people swear by it too. Just relaying my experience with it.

For me, Neurontin and it's close cousin Lyrica have been life-saving. I had a spinal cord injury that left me with truly debilitating nerve pain, and these drugs (in quite high doses) let me get back to life. I went from not leaving the house or driving myself to working full time and then getting a graduate degree. I have been on one or the other for ten years now. Tc's comment about it originally being an epilepsy drug is true, but that doesn't mean it has no use for pain control. Most drugs have more than one use. (The company was in trouble for marketing the drug for a use it was not FDA approved for.). And it does have some scary side effects, but so does every single drug in my medicine cabinet, especially the RA drugs. If some of the pain GrammyKat is dealing with is cause by compressed nerves (which does happen a lot in RA), then there is reason to think Neurontin might help. I certainly hope it does!

Thank you everyone. for your comments. They have been helpful. I am still in the process of working up to full dose. Taking it very slow. Yes, I do have some nerves involved. I have had steroid shots in my spine twice and the next step is surgery. I really don't want that. I think he is hoping this medication will keep me from having the pain with it. I hope he is right. So far it seems to be working well. Sure does make me sleepy. I am really resting way better now.
