Rheumatoid Arthritis Support Group
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, inflammatory, multisystem, autoimmune disorder. It is a disabling and painful condition which can lead to substantial loss of mobility due to pain and joint destruction. The disease is also systemic in that it often also affects many extra-articular tissues throughout the body including the skin, blood vessels, heart, lungs, and...

I had my three-month appointment yesterday, and asked the rheumatologist if there was any data this early indicating whether RA/PsA patients were more or less likely to get the virus.
It's something I've been curious about, as I suspect we all have. We're taking immunosuppressants, how might that factor in? Does the overactive immune system we're trying to actively suppress actually help us? As a group, we are (perhaps) more tuned in to our general health than others might be; is that paying off for us?
Not surprisingly, she said it's far too early to have any conclusive results, but -
She is part of a consortium of rheumatologists who have been having a Zoom meeting once a week to just casually compare experiences. Not a large group, she said, it's about thirty total, all former medical school classmates.
So bear that in mind - from a scientific standpoint, this is a mere blip, this is too small a sample, too anecdotal, etc. But it's still encouraging to hear that this group of rheumatologists does not have one single Covid-positive patient to their knowledge in their practices.
All the usual caveats apply: they're well aware they might simply not know of someone who's positive, and they're well aware that insufficient testing factors into this, and a patient who reported being int he lcear at last week's appointment cold well have become ill in the interim, and so on. And there's simply no way to draw any other conclusions, but she said that our collective attention paid to our overall health is without a doubt in our favor.
But that's a lot more encouraging than hearing an anecdotal report that there are higher numbers of infection in our subset, you know? So, let's take it for what it is: a tiny, hearsay sort of sample, but still, one that sounds encouraging.

I've been on high dose prednisone for pneumonia, and now I am slowly weaning. But lots of symptoms I don't like having, plus overeating has put at least 10 lbs on me. The food is "loud" as the GLP-1 users refer to it.Also pressured speech. Which comes out in my posts. Sorry I posted so much. I just need an outlet for my agitated and irritable brain. Just scroll on by my posts, if they are too...

I haven't been around in a long time. I am admin in a private group, and I would like to upgrade someone else to that position. I thought I knew how to do that, but the prompt has gone missing. Or is it not allowed to upgrade someone else to admin? I just find "ban and demote" under "Edit." I don't get notifications to DS anymore, but I wil come back in a few days to find out the answer. There...
Stay well and safe!
In times when panic is truly justified, the panic itself can get in the way of making clear decisions.
In times when panic is not justified, it's going to harm us physically by raising adrenaline levels and heartrate and so on.
I am not quite so clear on exactly how we keep from feeling panicky. I keep trying different approaches and many of them help, but I still haven't found the perfect one. And maybe my perfect answer isn't the one that will work for someone else. It's worth searching for, though.
In the past week I have felt that claustrophobic panic feeling about a number of topics, and I can say with certainty that my anxiety didn't make a single one of those things any better. I'm learning to re-direct it, so now when it sneaks up on me I can acknowledge it and move on.
Hugs.
I agree that this constant stress level is not healthy, especially when combined with the pain levels we experience with RA!
LOL! Unfortunately, I tend to be a germaphobic worry-wort! Recent losses of family members have made me keenly aware of my own mortality.
Also, I live in NJ which is part of the Epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak!
But Thanks again for your thoughts. In this period of uncertainty, it was nice to get an encouraging message!
Stay Safe!
Hugs!
Each of us is unique to begin with with unique immune ststems effected by many different factors. And each of us is on different immunosupressants.
For myself, my RA is very severe. That means my immune system is vicioulsy attacking my joints etc and has been for decades. I am permanently deformed and when not on meds, in excrutiating pain.
I believe the immunusupresseants I take (Zeljanz) tap down that overactive immune system and bring it back to normal, but not below. That is my mind set. That is what i focus on, not fear. That is the image I hold in my head.
I may get tested casue I attended a very crowded BLM/George Floyd protest in Princeton yesterday. Until then, I had barley been out of the house.
However, I am glad I needed to go on Plaquenil for my RA, because my understanding is that it stops the cytokine storm, which is what is bad for people like us, with suppressed immune systems or lung and heart damage. I hope all the demonstrations end up in a resurgence of COVID.
I've been attending a lot of Zoom conferences with the Canadian Arthritis Society with doctors answering questions. It also reassured me, a lot.
