My eye doctor first noticed mine at a "young" age too...and she told me it was most likely the steroids. In the 5 years since, they haven't ripened or really changed much. I was definitely shocked by the diagnosis though....just wasn't something I was prepared to hear.

When I was in my late 40's, I was told I had the beginnings of cataracts. I did not get RA for almost 20 years after that, so I do not think - at least in my case - they are related.

Forgot to add - 20 years later, the status of the cataracts is about the same. But, it is good to keep a watch over it.

Bluedog You should know better than to ask; what's next. Silly man. After my eye fiasco the surgeon told me to expect another surgery in 6 or so months for cataracts, not a great thing to look forward to for darn sure. I guess since I'm in my 60s it shouldn't be a great shock. I'm beginning to think everything is related to RA! Trish

I had my cataracts removed around 2006. Things sure looked brighter afterward. I was about 47 also. My ophthalmologist said they were mainly due to long term steroid use for RA.

Geez, sorry to hear that Bluedogs. Hopefully just calm for a while.

I had cataracts taken off both eyes years ago. In 18 months they went from surgery 5-6 years ahead to "must be done now" The opthamologist said it was the RA meds causing the acceleration . However I was in my sixties.
Really, a simple operation and wonderful results so please don't be scared if you do have to have it..

I first found out I had cataracts I was 49, now 51 was just told the other day they are worse. Steroids.

I was told two weeks ago that I have the beginning of cataracts. I'm only 36! I have had dry eyes since I was 8 (although no SS diagnosis) and I asked if him if my eyes being dried out all the time could make it more progressive and his reply was, "Well it certainly won't help your eyes." Sigh. Thanks doc.

I see a bunch of Texans in this discussion. UV is another big culprit. For those of us living further south or at higher altitude who aren't religious about wearing sunglasses, time to get religion.

Love your doggie picture, so cute! One of my pugs watches every move I make in the kitchen (hoping I'll drop something, ha, lucky for him I have dropsy a lot). I was DX with cataracts @ age 59 and was shocked (guess I thought I was too 'young' LOL) & yep, I have taken prednisone & there is a definite connection between the two. ;o(
Mine have gotten worse this past year & so I'll be scheduling the surgery next month---am not to thrilled about it!

My mother is 91 yo and had her left eye operated on about a month ago and now she is just a'giinin' around like nobody's business. Had her right eye done about 2 years ago

I read as much as I could - as we all do the moment another symptom manifests itself. I suppose it's a combination of the steroid and glucose. My glucose is usually aok, but with the steroid use and it being summer (my BIG EXCUSE _ SUMMER WITH THE KIDS OUT OF SCHOOL = BAD DIET), I'm sure it didn't help.

Thanks for mentioning sunglasses I used to wear them but now I wear glasses as contacts don't work on these dry eyes. I ordered a new pr of glasses with the clip sunshade. (anyone else ever use zenni optical? My sister and her kids swear by them. I have a pr of progressives with anti reflective coating and the sun shade clip coming for $43!!)

Hey bcatz - after today, I agree 100% with you. Today was one of "THOSE" days where even the jello tasted like POOH - I'm sorry, sorta unlike me - JELLO is POOH - Jello should be renamed KALE. Jello should be outlawed and sent away somewhere - don't know where but just away

Jello is only fit for tiny children and invalids. One of the best parts of being vegetarian is that you have an instant excuse to shun Jello.

P.S. My elementary school used to put canned peas in Jello. Talk about your nauseous "salads." They probably put kale in there too these days. Yowzah!!
