Asbestos that is not disturbed will not damage your lungs. It's only when its disturbed and turned into an airborne dust that it impacts your health. I've researched this at length being a chemistry/environmental teacher and having always worked in buildings that are 40+ years old and filled with asbestos. If you have an older house and plan to sell it, it must be inspected for both lead and asbestos and the results provided to potential buyers.

The most common illness resulting from prolonged exposure/ breathing it in is mesothelioma cancer. Microscopically, asbestos is just like the glass in volcanic ash and fiberglass dust. They are breathed in and never leave. They destroy healthy sections of lung tissue through irritation.

Hi. I have just bought a new house and discovered i have AIB asbestos in the soffits! I found this article that was very helpfull. they also have a link to a company who offers diy asbestos kits, which i ordered. (glad I did as people on the forums were telling me just to cover it and not worry). hope it helps!

I made silver jewellry on asbestos for 6 years, and also had an asbestos wall next to the fire place. You could see the sparks coming off the as I was soldering. And no ventolation for that, or the cadmium and lead in the solder. My ex got it from an old mine that was being closed, in 1975.

I have terrible lung issues, although I have never been diagnosed with anything but small airway passage asthma. But that is weird in itself. Something to do with particles trapped deep in the lungs! Like asbestos?

There is some studies out there about exposure to asbestos and RA. It has been a while since I read them. I don't believe my RA was caused by asbestos exposure, but I don't think it helped either
