Look at the Footsmart site on internet. Found a ankle brace there that was thin enough to wear with shoes and mostly comfortable.

I have tried many different braces, store bought to Podiatrist provided. None worked to satisfaction. Recently my Dr ordered braces built by a prosthetics clinic. They casted from my toes to the top of my calf. Sent the castings off and had braces built. The braces move up and down (toes un and down through ankle movement), not at all side to side. There are no straps across the feet thank goodness only across the calf area. They must be worn in shoes. I have a pair of airsole tennis shoes I wear them in and they have worked wonders for my ankle and heel pain. The swelling in my ankles has gone down also. Other braces helped here or there but nothing comes near to as complete relief as these. Good luck in your search. Hope you find something that works well for you and soon!

Hi Terri, Today I just got an ankle brace that seems to feel good and stabilize my ankle. My rheum dr. wrote a script for a prosthesis company (in Philadelphia it's called Hanger Clinic) to make it. We didn't have time for a custom-made brace because I need it right away for my hip replacement surgery next week. They had a ready-made one that they modified a little for me, and it keeps my ankle from turning and supports it. I have severe RA deformity in that ankle. I can drive with it and walk around better. It's comfortable so far and worn with shoes.

I bought mine at Wal-mart and Rite-aid. They are all black so I am color coordinated! the wrist ones have metal support in them, the ankle is just thick stiff material with adjustable velco closures. I have a lumbar back one too. I thought that they would hurt with the swelling, but I was in so much pain, I bought the wrist ones, and then those worked so well I bought the ankle ones. Mine don't fit with my shoes, but if I bought a bigger shoe, I think it would work fine. The back one is super nice, when I can stand to wear it, but that's from tummy troubles (which I think RA exagerates, but thats another story)! I bought one knee one, but it does not work. It doesn't stay in place and the metal support don't bend when I walk, they just twist.
