I've heard that prescription drugs are the drug of choice for high school kids and that they are the main cause of addiction problems. (This is in nice neighborhoods, too- not just the places you wouldn't want to walk alone.) I was quite grateful last summer when the local sheriff's office had a drug drop-off weekend. I had a couple bottles of narcotics I had left over from surgery, some that my son didn't take when he broke his arm, a couple of things I was allergic to and quit taking, lots of stuff.

With three high school/college age sons, there are a ton of kids in and out of our house. It never really occurred to me that anyone might steal any of what we had. Glad I got rid of all the "fun" stuff.

Sadly, I have a nephew who steals his mom's meds. He had a shoulder injury that ended in unsuccessful surgery so he has a lot of pain. His doctor just keeps writing him prescriptions for Lortabs and he takes too many at a time. When he runs out, he steals the meds if he can find some or steals things so he sell them and buy illegally. Before this addiction, he was a normal young husband and father. His mom is a nurse and has confronted the doctor and told him that her son is addicted and begged him not to give him any more. The doctor insists that knows he needs the meds and continues to write the prescriptions. HIs parents have to keep all meds locked up and meanwhile this addiction has cost him his marriage and at age 33 he is dependent on his parents again. Hard to keep a job when you're high all the time.....hard on parents who love him but can't trust him alone in their home and don't know how to help a man who can't admit he needs help. Breaks my heart.

I have had friends try to buy my pain meds and I keep telling them no but here is an interesting story for you. I was living on my own I was 23 three years into having RA and the pain was extreme and I would take pain meds when I got off work and I didn't realize I needed to hide them I was the only one with a key to my apartment I got home took the lid of my bottle and realize over 100 of my perocet was missing. My script is for 180 perocet 10/325 and it was my landlord who stole them. Here's the real kicker though he threaten to evict because I called the police to get documention for my doctor and he want to evict me for starting drama by calling the cops. So that's my story
