Rhabdomyolysis Support Group
Rhabdomyolysis is the breakdown of skeletal muscle due to injury. The result of this process is renal failure due to accumulation of muscle breakdown products in the bloodstream, which are injurous to the kidney. Treatment is with intravenous fluids, and dialysis if necessary. The main therapeutic measure is hyperhydration (by administering intravenous fluids), and if...
In both instances, the dr. has had no idea why I came down with it. He figures it's just a combo of little things that put altogether caused it (such as maybe a little too much exercise, a little bit of dehydration, a little bit of a flu bug, etc.) because there was nothing I did, or was suffering from, that was the one big contributor.
Honestly, I feel the drs. just don't know much what to tell you other than "rest & hydrate" which gets frustrating to hear. I've found reading everyone's comments and asking people on this site questions to be the most comfort I get.
Write me anytime or post, everyone on this site has been very helpful, and I appreciate everyone and hope that each and everyone of us can put this rhabdo behind us!
I bought cases of Gatorade for him to drink every few hours. His CPK was checked every few days and after about a week and a half it was under 100. He is taking exercising real slowly now.
The doctor said it was lucky I took him right away when I noticed the sedimentation of the brown urine. I mean it literally settled on the bottom. Irreparable damage would have been the result.
There is so much marketing of exercise supplements to teens and young adults without much warning or supervision.
It is appalling that my son was the third case of a young person being admitted for rhabdo in a one week period at the ER.
I am in my fifties, and I exercise two hours a day five days a week. After what my son when through, I am careful not to ramp up my daily exercise or running too quickly.
I'm also curious because his initial attack was very similar to my own regarding his CK levels. Within a week, mine was down to under 100, which is unusually low compared to nearly everyone else's I've seen in these groups.
I wish you and your son well, and hope you'll see this and come back to share an update!
