For an educational presentation to demonstrate the concept of "coercive control," I'm trying to find examples of "partner control" in modern popular films of TV. By "partner control," I'm looking for things other than overt physical aggression...such as emotional, financial, sexual, and psychological manipulation (you're nothing without me, you need me and only I can help you, you can't leave me because of finances, I'll keep the kids away from you to punish you, I'll turn the kids against you, I'll make people think you're crazy, etc.)

Can you think of examples of coercive control/manipulation in modern popular films?

I would look at Waitress (an overall light film, but the husband is unpleasant to say the least)

The Painted Veil (it's period but it might work)

The Color Purple

These are probably good to start with. The problem I think you might have with the search is most of the kinds of films you are looking for eventually devolve into physical violence. The Duchess touches on the theme (again its a period piece)

IMDB has a good cloud database of films and you should be able to find more if you search there.

I don't know of any movies but this woman Patricia Evans has explained it in a new way. Describes how the verbal abuser is telling the other person how who and what she/he feels is ect. Definition of emotional abuse.

Have you ever considered Tyler Perrys remake of the 70' poetry book: For Colored Girls? One scene in movie depicts the silent abuse of emotional and psycholigical abuse of a man backfrom war and how he handles his "woman."

28 days (sandra bullock) is a story of a women's journey through rehab and shows an unhealthy relationship with a man (a man that kept her into drugs and alcohol)

I actually think a lot of disney films are bad for women and their perception of what is good in relationships. Not exactly in the realm of your question but I am in the process of writing an article about how disney portrays dangerous men (who eventually turn good) as desirable.

How about Popeye? (remember... 1980-something, Robin Williams). The constable and bluto have the entire town under control with threats of taxation. When Popeye shows up and doesn't fall in line with the constable's rules he punishes Olive Oyl's family and they lose their house and everything they own.
