Renal Cell Carcinoma (Kidney Cancer) Support Group
Renal cell carcinoma, also known by a gurnistical tumor, is the most common form of kidney cancer arising from the renal tubule. It is the most common type of kidney cancer in adults. Initial therapy is with surgery. It is notoriously resistant to radiation therapy and chemotherapy, although some cases respond to immunotherapy.
When tumors are found early, there are no symptoms. Most are found while looking for something else.
My husband had a radical nephrectomy, but got along really well. He was weak for the first month...so some assistance would probably be very beneficial.
I wish you all the best with the surgery. So glad that your prognosis is excellent.
Hugs,
Ingrid
Do feel free to ask any questions here.
Good luck with your surgery. Please let us know how it goes.

I had a bad backache and an MRI pointed to a 12 cm tumor which was a complete surprise.
after surgery and your declared status is No Evidence of Disease
(NED), your doc will probably order periodic CT scans. also, someone should be checking kidney function in your remaining kidney. these tests are called BUN, GFR and for your creatinine level.
Google the terms to understand what they represent and to get an indication what results are considered acceptable.
you probably should have an oncologist and a urologist (or a nephrologist) on your team. when you are NED, it is not crucial that the onc be an RCC specialist but it helps if they are at least aware of the uniqueness of this type of cancer. we are in a "special" class when it comes to tracking RCC
good luck & be well, Rich
