Renal cell carcinoma, also known by a gurnistical tumor, is the most common form of kidney cancer arising from the renal tubule. It is the most common type of kidney cancer in adults. Initial therapy is with surgery. It is notoriously resistant to radiation therapy and chemotherapy, although some cases respond to immunotherapy.

double nephrectomy

Hi I am new to this support group and usually join the polycystic kidney disease forum as that is he underlying disease that I have. I am in end stage renal failure with a kidney function of 10% and have recently had a significant bleeding episode which lasted for 6 weeks, during which time I lost a lot of blood. I have CT scan and MRI scan and they have diagnosed suspected cancer and have scheduled a double nephrectomy for 2nd November 2011. My kidneys and liver are extremely large due to my condition and so I will need open surgery which they have said will last over 7 hours and 3 surgeons will be required. Due to all the pain I am in and not being able to eat and breathe properly I have been quite looking forward to the surgery as it will help me move my life forward (I hope) but it's suddenly dawning on me about the scale of the operation and also whenter it is cancer. If it is I cannot go on transplant list- I have handled this pretty well up until now but now feel really scared and wondered if anyone else had been through a double nephrectomy for suspected kidney cancer

God I wish I knew more about your situation to help you but I don't. I am still really interested in some of the bio treatments and wonder if they could also help here.

I had surgery on my right kidney in Feb, second surgery to remove my left kideny 4/6. It's overwhelming at times, but it is what it is, I'm getting the best care I can get, just need to do what I have to do. I sympathize with your situation and hope all the best for you.

I have had only my right kidney removed due to cancer, but when I read your post I just had to reply and send you some love. Will be lifting you up as you continue on this journey. Hang in there....I can't pretend to know exactly how you feel, but would like to encourage and support you. Keep us posted. I have had 8 more surgeries since my kidney was removed and I have to say that staying on this sight and hearing about and from others has really helped me stay positive!

I am so very sorry about such an overwhelming disease you have and the possibility of cancer on top of all that you are up against.. I am the wife and caregiver to my husband who was d/x in 2008 with Metastatic Renal cell Carcinoma stage 4.. I wanted to convey to you that you are in my prayers, how much my heart goes out to you, with my hope that you are doing better today.. Please know you are being thought of today as a very brave, couragous, women who told us your story..

Many prayers, much hope and lots of faith are being sent to you, i am so very sorry for all you are going through..

Thank you all for such lovely messages of support. Since my initial posting I can now happily confirm that I do not have cancer- the cysts were abnormal. I am obviously ecstatic at this but now have no kidneys and am doing home hemo dialysis 5 days a week which is extremely time consuming. I have not yet recovered to full health since the removal of my kidneys and do not know whether this is down to the dialysis sessions which leave me feeling weak, trembling, stomach cramps and back pain. Hopefully will at some point in near future overcome these symptoms and get my life back to some kind of normality. I am now on transplant list and am hoping that one day I will be lucky enough to get a match. Thank you so much for your concern and support

Thanks so much for letting us know how you got on. What a wonderful relief to find out there is no cancer. However, of course you are still dealing with dialysis which would be very difficult.
So my hopes and wishes are that you will find a transplant match in the near future.
You are a very courageous and strong person.

No cancer, that is great news. That is a positive thing to hold on to even though you're still having to go through such a tough time. I can't imagine what it's like but please know that you're not alone and even people you haven't met in person, like me, do care and will pray for you. I just had a hand assist laparoscopic right radical nephrectomy and im 9 days post surgery, recovering, and thanking God for each day he gives me. Stay positive. I hope you get your match real soon! :)
