Some interesting studies have emerged about womens use of pornography and their views of rape. Most clinical research suggests that pornography itself does not cause higher incidence of rape, but it does appear to cause increased societal scorn of rape victims. In other words, it may not cause rape, but it causes people who use pornography to be less empathetic and sensitive to rape survivors. But this brings up an interesting question: what happens to rape *victims* who use porn? Do they also lose empathy for other victims/survivors? For themselves?
The answer appears to be yes. A 2004 study found that among women who viewed or read pornography, their thoughts and attitudes changed. Exposure to porn generally led to changes in self-esteem and greater acceptance of rape myths and interpersonal violence and lower self-esteem and more tolerance of rape and other violence. Yikes!

My experience with erotica has been probably the opposite; I've found it helpful in exploring/ accepting my own needs rather than what other people would tell me is 'normal'.
But it all depends what you go looking for I suppose - there's a lot of material around, some good and some bad.
