No this is NOT a good idea. It would not stop rape nor would it cause the rapist to be caught. Please read Elisheva's article.

This device might be useful in a place like the Congo, where rape is used as a weapon of war.

However rape can really only be prevented by the rapists. We can do everything we can as prevention but its sad - we shouldn't have to. We should be able to live in a world where we don't have to watch our drinks, can wear what ever we want, trust who ever we want and not have to worry about being raped.

I can see this being used against rape survivors in court - if a short skirt or intoxication is held against survivors, or hell not even saying "no" properly can be held against a survivor, I can see them saying "oh she wasn't wearing the anti rape device!"

Also, in order for the device to work, the survivor has to be penetrated... I don't think this is going to make the experience any less traumatic. I think attempted rape is almost as bad as a rape actually occurring. What's to stop a rapist from drugging a woman, checking for the device and then taking it out?

Those are just some of my thoughts on the issue. I feel like the device puts more of the responsibility and prevention on women than it does the rapists, who are the ones who are the most responsible and could prevent rape 100% of the time if they didn't rape.

In the congo, weapon-of-war rapes are almost always gang rapes and guns are inserted into women's privates, often as a matter of course. It would be completely useless. The gun nozzle could be used to remove the device. The rapists would have nothing to stop them.

Sadly, there really isn't any context where this would be a "safe" form of protection.

I'm not sure I like that device. I like the idea of carrying a can of wasp spray on the floor of your car. It sprays further than mace and wasp spray will blind the rapist, as long as you spray enough of it in his eyes. I would spray it in his eyes and when he cries out for mercy, say, "s u r e" and keep sprayin his eyes til that big can is gone. At least he'll never see again.
