By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.

I have had PEs twice and am on Coumadin for life. Clots were unprovoked.
My last PE was just over a year ago.
A couple of weeks ago I lost vision in one of my eyes for a short time. After this happened a couple more times I went to see the doctor.
Today I had an emergency appointment with the opthamologist who says I have had clots in the artery of my eye and is likely caused by carotid artery clots.
This was completely unexpected and I have no idea what this will mean for me. They are increasing my INR range to 2.5-3.
I have so many questions but have to have a few more tests before I et anymore answers.
At the moment I am feeling very alone, similar to how I felt with the PEs.
I don't know anyone else who has experienced this. I didn't know anyone who'd had PEs either.
Life continues on but I feel a little out of the loop I guess. Has any one else had carotid clots causing occular clots out there?

mj568, when are your additional tests happening?
rmb. I had an bilateral carotid ultrasound 2 days ago and an ultrasound to check for abdominal aortic aneurysm yesterday.
According to the opthamologist the clot in the eye artery usually comes from the carotid artery.
So next week I will get the results of those tests.
Why I keep clotting on warfarin I don't know.
I have a completely overwhelmed husband so I am mindful not to overwhelm him further with my confusion/ fear of this latest problem.
I am hoping that my doctor may have some ideas on how to manage this. It is a continuing puzzle and a little lonely. However I am lucky to have 5 small children to provide constant distraction and fun.
Even if others here haven't experienced this type of clotting, you know you can come here to talk and vent, right?

Believe me, it's all very scary and you've come to the right place. This group has been a godsend of information as I go through this. I would have not known what to expect with my last PE if it weren't for this group. There is not much information out there.
And so my clotting journey continues......
