I bruised very easily before I even took warfarin. I have noticed some bruises on my legs that I wasn't aware of. They went away and now I am more careful not to bump into things.

Maybe when you had your recent CT you laid down funny. Who knows. There are times when I whack myself and think I will get a bruise and don't. And other times where they seem to come of out of nowhere. If your INR isn't high and it's not super painful or getting bigger, I'd not be too concerned but you can always call your doc and ask what he thinks.

Does it mean anything if it gets bigger and darker.?
I've come to expect unexplained bruising (im not very coordinated) but have one on the bottom of my foot that is growing. Debating with myself whether I feel like taking it to the dr too

When I say bigger, I'm thinking hematoma.

I mean, you've all had bruises before being on warfarin so you know how they work and naturally look, right? Sometimes bruising spreads especially when it's in the lower part of your body. For instance, when I was a kid and tore ligaments in my knee, my knee bruised right away, and then slowly spread down to my ankle. Also, bruising naturally get darker as it gets older and then they start to fade. I just bent over to pick something up and hit my eyebrow on my the corner of my night stand last week. It bruised immediately and got darker over the course of a few days, and just the last couple of days it's finally lightening up.

If your bruising now looks really odd or it's out of the norm painful or like something isn't right, then ask your doc.

I get bruises all the time that I have no idea where they came from. Sometimes small ones, sometimes not. I had one last year that looked like I got hit by a golf ball, which I'm pretty sure I would have remembered, had it happened.

I've never figured out why I bruise (or don't) on warfarin. I've had times where I've whacked myself good and don't bruise and times when I've slept odd and my medical ID bracelet causes a bruise.

I only had one bruise of concern. It was on my foot, very painful, and big enough that I could see it on both the top and bottom of my foot. I was on crutches for a while because my foot was flooded with blood and it hurt to walk. I did see the doc, but they just kept an eye on it and eventually it started to go away. We never did figure out what caused it.

So, my rule of thumb is basically if it is large and getting bigger, or very painful, I go get it checked out. Otherwise, they usually just go away after a few days.

That is one thing my doctor told me when I started on Warfarin is that I will bruise more easily. I used to get a few unknown bruises before but now they seem a little more noticeable when I do get them.

The thing I am noticing more is that my skin seems a little thinner or something. I get a small scratch and it seems like I immediately start bleeding where before it might not even bleed at all. I just figure it is due to the Warfarin that I am on and will changed back when/if I get to go off the medicine.

I just figure that all the bruising, small bleeds,etc is all due to the medicine and take it in stride. If it was a big one or hurt, I would go to the doctor right away to get it checked out just to be on the safe side!

There doesn't seem to be any hard and fast rule about bruising/bleeding on anticoagulation. I slipped on wet grass recently and went down rather hard. It didn't seem as though anything BROKE so I got up and walked to the house. Didn't plan to seek medical attention until I saw what I thought was too much discoloration on the ankle I had twisted. So off I went to the ER where x-rays of ankle and shoulder showed no fracture. Treatment: Ace wrap and rest to ankle and rest to right shoulder. I develped an egg-shaped bruise on each forearm. None of medical staff seemed concerned about my being on warfarin and did not check INR. However, if it happens again, I will go to ER and get chcked out -- only way to tell whether to worry or not. Also, once I had a very small amount of rectal bleeding (no hemorrhoids) and the MD checked my INR, found it to be 3.3 and ordered to hold warfarin for 4 days, after which the INR was 1.3 -- practically nonexistent antigoagulation. So how does one know exactly what to do? Folks, we are between a rock and a hard place with this illness.
