By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.

This is an interesting article from the New York Times.
It suggests that at least one doctor out there is using statins (usually used to treat high cholesterol) to treat patients with blood clots.
Looks like there is some empirical evidence that statins may prevent clots.
I'm not going to go off coumadin tomorrow, given my history...

By the way, I'm not on statins anymore. My specialist found out that my GP prescribed them and said it was absolute rubbish as I was too young to have to worry about my cholesterol levels...
Initial reports said it was looked at as a preventative, not as a therapeutic treatment so in regards to whether or not it would be considered as a replacement for Coumadin/Warfarin the initial answer was no. Hopefully once I shed some more light I can more appropriate fill you all in.

I read about this in one of the UK newspaper. From what it said it would appear that statins have so far only been proved to prevent development of VTE rather than treating them.
The study is in the New England Journal of Medicine.
