If I understand the discussion this morning, warfarin can give you diarrhea? That's why I've been having it since a few days after I started warfarin. Is it o.k. to take some Immodium? I start back to work on Monday and can't be running in and out of the bathroom. Does going on coumadin change that? I have been told by the doctor that warfarin is basically rat poison; so we are basically taking poison. And he said sometimes the side affects out way the good it is doing, and you have to think of something else. But at least it explains why I feel like this. I thought it was nerves cause I also have a little IBS.

Warfarin can be hard on your gut, like cause gas and bloating. You can ask your pharmacist if it's ok to take imodium.

That poison business is blown out of proportion. Many drugs were derived from other uses. Chemo was derived from mustard gas.

I have ulcerative colitis so I have GI issues as well. It's hard to know what causes what when you have other health issues.

Warfarin is rat poison, but Sweet and Low will kill a rat in high dosages. Warfarin kills rats by making them hemorrhage from overdosing on it.

Most of our processed foods are poisonous. Read a food label, and you swear you're eating more chemicals than actual food. I'm just trying to put it in perspective,

At these doses, warfarin is saving our lives, not poisoning us. Anything can kill you at too high a dose, even water (try googling "water poisoning" or "hyponatremia" if you're curious).

Also, yeah, call your pharmacist and ask what is safe to take with warfarin. They're great with stuff like that.

I don't have upset tummy a lot, but I have noticed more, um frequency since being on warfarin. I did ask about immodium, and they said it was ok.

I'd call your doctor/pharm and ask, though.

I know a lot of things are derived from poison, just pointing out why some of us have severe reactions. And I have pet rats, so I am very aware of what it can do to them. Wow...didn't mean to start something. PE are deadly too...so you do what you can. A lot of meds are dangerous. I guess you also need to put into perspective why it's o.k. if you don't have to be on it for life.

I am a lifer on Warfarin since I still have the bilateral clots in my lungs after almost two years. I do have diarrhea frequently as a result and I always take Immodium for it - it works and I have had no bad reactions.

I agree with rmb about asking your pharmacist too - I get better advice from mine than I do from my PCP. In fact my PCP often goes to the same pharmacist to double check matters as needed. Good luck!

The subject had a long treatment a few years ago. I may go look for the link sometime. What came out of the discussion is that for those who get digestive issues, sometimes it helps to go from generic Warfarin to brand Coumadin (maybe vice versa in some cases). The active ingredient is supposed to be no different, but the buffer (intert) ingredients are far different indeed.

Thank you. If it continues to be a problem, I will talk to the doctor. It's just mildly annoying at this time. But if this is for life, it would be nice to figure out a way around it.

    We all have 24 hours in a day.  How we spend these hours is important.  Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do.  Gonna have to work on that.Your turn.  Tell me another truth.
