Pulmonary Embolism Support Group
By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.
I wanted to write and say something constructive to you - not sure if this will be any use, but here goes:
I've seen the respiratory consultant 3 times since my PEs. Basically he went through what happened, showed me the CT scans, and explained about the damage my PE's did to my heart...i guess he is actually a cardio-thoracic consultant (think that's spelt right!)
I had to have another chest x-ray, to check for infections i guess??? 2 more heart echo's (depends if your did any damage to your heart i guess!?)...and i also had to wear a heart monitor overnight! i have also had to have lung function tests, and a 6-minute walk test, both of which will be repeated in march, a year after my PE's. I also have to go for a different exercise/lung function test soon! so i'm guessing you might have to have some of these...maybe!?
The consultant also spoke about my warfarin, and generally answered any questions i had!
Hope that helps - probably not! i guess every case is different, and we've all probably had a range of tests and experiences with our consultants! xxx
Part of my dx after the series of tests was costracondritis. Which sounds like the pain you'r having across your chest. Unfortuantely this is an inflammoarty disease and while we are on coumading there's not much we can do. However it did help to know that some of my pain was coming from that and not new PE's. They did multiple breathing tests to see what my breathing function was. HAVe be honest some were a bit hard ~not painful but hard. I had great tech for them all and made them as "fun" as possible. I learned more from my pulomonologist than anyone else.
Don't be scared just think of it as having another supporter in your corner :0)
