By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.

I am new to the dicussion page and just wanted to know if anyone has experienced extensive multiple PE?
I was diagnosed with this 3 months ago and like a lot of you out there still have shortness of breath, chest pain and LOTS of worries!
I seem to have recieved the standard treatment and have had a partial thrombo screen.
Is the recovery time any different and will I ever feel better!

do you mean multiple PEs at the same time, or like one PE after another, so difference incidences?
Because multiple PEs at the same time are very common, in fact most PEs happen that way. When the clot goes through the heart, sometimes the sheer force and pressure of it being shoved through the valves causes what would have been one big clot to break into small peices. Which, if you think about it, is a lot safer! its much better to have a few teeny clots than one massive one, as the smaller ones will lodge them selves further down the artery causing less damage.

Multiple clots in one go! A couple were quite big and sitting in the pulmonary arteries and a few small ones as well. Told being younger and reasonably healthy means wasnt too unwell despite diagnosis. Guess in this case you are right. Small is great! Kate
I have multiple PE too and I was diagnosed two months ago. I still have pain - "twinges" as i call them but have been told that is totally normal!
I also get alot of anxiety/panic attacks, mostly at night when i am trying to go to sleep - apparantly this too is also normal! It's a HORRIBLE feeling and you feel like the worst i going to happen to you. Its all psychological and i think its just from the trauma of hospital and will pass.
I think the shortness of breath will stay with us for awhile as your lungs wont get completely better for 2-3 years or so the doctor has told me.
