I was told none of the oral contraception was safe enough. I now have the merina coil as it only releases small amount of hormone stays in the uterus and very little gets into the blood stream.
Was a bit sore at first but after things settled is no problem. And best of all very light/zero periods which was essential for me as I was anaemic.

The mini pill contains progesterone but no estrogen which is why your OBGYN said it's ok. My OBGYN said it was ok for me to have the Merina IUD which contains progestrone, like Kate mentioned. I however kind of just wantd to get out of the hormone birth control all together after the PE and twice DVT and opted for a copper IUD. Heavier periods but I just would prefer to not have the hormones. Of course, I'm 45 and could probably benefit from some progestrone since I've started perimenapouse. But I'm just going to deal.

I have been told no pill or anything with hormones because my only risk factor for the PE was birth control.

My pcp who had been very good at the PE stuff, said, IUD, or get my tubes tided. At 47 I think is my best choice, but I just wanted more feedback about ruling out the mini pill so quickly..

I had two different OB/GYNs tell me the mini-pill was the way to go. I started taking it four years after my first DVT (caused by regular BC) and had a second DVT six weeks later. At this point, I won't go near anything even remotely hormonal. Better not to risk it.

Amen sister. I'm totally spooked by all hormone based BC.

Thanks so much for this article. It gives me hope for birth control options for those of us who have had a PE at a young age. My OB thought I could not go on any other BC pills. I will have to share this article with her.

Just to mention something I don't see here already, and this is really outside of the debate about whether any hormones are okay (all my doctors said progesterone would be okay, by the way). When I was having this conversation with my doctors, the big thing they cautioned me about in terms of the mini-pill was that it has to be taken so strictly in order for it to be effective birth control. They said they don't really recommend it be used at the same time as someone who is currently on coumadin for the risk of getting pregnant while taking it and the risk of birth defects from coumadin. They recommended the progesterone IUD because of that, but I've not gone that route either so I can't say in terms of experience anything about that. Anyway, that is just something else that anyone who is on coumadin might want to consider before going the mini-pill route.

I come off coumadin the middle of next month, and get tested to see if I have any other factors for a PE... I don't have to make my mind up right away, so time will tell.
