By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.
Hey there..
Has anyone else had injuries that resulted in them getting the PE? I injured the ligaments in my knee a couple of months ago, and three weeks of immobility turned into a DVT and PE. I find that having the PE made me 'forget' almost about the knee injury, or at least think of it as less important. But now that I am feeling better post embolism I am starting to worry about my knee again.
I initially injured the ligament on my right knee, but even though that is healing fine, some pain every now and then but getting a lot better.. the annoying thing is that the swelling on the knee caused my peroneal nerve to be affected, so now I have foot drop! I can't move my foot at all and have to wear a ankle support thing to keep my foot from scraping on the ground when I walk. I'm being sent for nerve conduction tests to find out the extent of damage to it and see what can be done.. but its irritating that even though the initial knee injury is almost healed now.. I am still feeling its wrath through the PE and the foot drop!
If my foot doesn't sort itself soon then I am going to have to wear big black trainers under my lilac floor length bridesmaid dress to my sisters wedding in august. Thats going to be horrendous!
I wish I could find a support group this good that centers around knee injury and foot drop in particular, as there doesn't seem to be much information out there about it! If anyone knows of any good sites, please let me know!

Originally I only found out that I fractured my knee cap due to getting bucked off my horse, but when that healed and I was still having probelms I switched doctors and found out that I had a torn ACL ligament. I had surgery to fix it but rushed the healing afterwards and ended up tearing it again while unloading hay, the second time it was completely tore. So I had a second surgery on November 12, 2009 to fix my ACL yet again. Surgery went great, I was on the road to recovery but then on November 17 I ended up in the hospital barely breathing.
No one ever told me about PE's and DVT's, I had no idea what they even were when they told me I had them. No one told me and if they had I would've taken procaustions.....instead I layed around after the 2nd surgery and hardly got out of bed which caused my PE's and DVT's.

I fractured my tibeal plateau and sprained some ligaments during a frisbee game. The doctor said I had some tearing of the ACL but that I wouldn't need surgery so I was extra careful about moving my knee/leg. It also didn't help that I stayed on birth control. No one told me birth control pills and immobilization are a huge factor in DVTs.
