Pulmonary Embolism Support Group
By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.

have any of you that has been put on oxygen experienced what i,ll call the unexpected miracle parts of being on home oxygen. for four years now since a bit after the first massive P.E.'s my blood pressure went and stayed sky high. i had chronic tachycardia heart rate average daily 100-120 some times as high as 160 just doing small things. my ankles far exceeded anything i could produce at the worst of toxemia. i could barley bend. always out of breath. tired beyond words yet my o2 readings wee always between 92-95 occasionally lower. the last time i went to e.r. the dr. admitted me with the concept of checking 02 levels 24/7 for 2 days along with other things hence they found at night it dropped into the mid 70's. day high 80's. so i went home begrudgingly on 02.
two and a half months later my blood pressure has been normal for two months. my daily heart rate is in the 60's . haven't seen that in so long i thought my heart was just gonna quit from running so fast all the time.
my ankles i can't stop staring at them they look so beautiful. they look tiny and normal i just want to cry every time i look at them or the dr takes my B.P. and heart rate. i can do bending exercises and touch toes and move my body in ways it has not been able to move in years add to that a 25 lb. weight loss my from being tethered to the house. i even hooked on the portable tank and was finally able to mow my own lawn. no one has an explanation.i also suffer from chronic migraines and almost daily headaches.i have not had one migraine and only a few small headaches. no one has an explanation. other that for a while i was severely anemic from the lovenox and it is cleared up now. i asked the pulminoligist if i have to give the oxygen back yet since my number looks good 02 i mean and he said no because i fall under the category of chronic reoccurring anemia. i keep it on almost all the time when i am at home i notice as soon as i take it off i start a wretched cough and as soon as i put it back on the cough goes away. i was wondering if anyone else has has such dramatic good benefits of home 02 use. i also noticed since the last clot i tire so easily that all my dr's are 1 hour drive and i have had to have others drive my because i tire so easily now i put on the oxygen and i can drive myself but that is about my limit.
i am blown away every time my pulse is taken and i look (stare) at my ankles and can think of no other explanation but the oxygen. the pulminoligist said sometimes what it does is make the kidney work better because they have usually lost some function from all the abuse the clots dished out. i don't know and i hope others have had similar good results. but i was afraid they wee gonna take the oxygen away till they figure out why it is providing so many benefits. i even got the courage to put on the small tank and ride my new bike around the block for the first time.
share your experiences on oxygen their must be more of you that have had unexpected additional benefits besides better breathing .

I have had no experience with it but if your dr. thinks it will benefit you and obviously it has then you should use it but that is just my opinion. Goood luck to you.

this won't help, but I was told oxygen is a drug and if at all possible get off of it as soon as possible. Which I did. The doctor also told me you can become dependent on it and that is not good. Not what you wanted to hear, but I haven't heard good things about it. It made my noise dry, the throat dry and was just generally a pain in the butt. This is my second PE and I have had ongoing shortness of breath..for the first PE and then a heart condition. This time I was so bad, I had to resort to oxygen for 3 days. Just my experience.

lyedez56 all that you say is what i was told in the beginning. then the turn around was when my night time o2 were dropping to in the 70's to 80's and day time mid to high 80's. my confusion is thier is so many things going on that the dr.s are fighting off the pulmanolagist said continue till we work out te sleep apnea. the hematolagist say continue till we work our the anemia and the cause. i had discontinued the day time o2 till i stared blacking out in stores and pulmanolagist says continue. so i get quite conflicting messages. the one thing i do know is the positive things i have seen are such an unexpected and welcome shock. i had some tests this week to see if the whole in the heart has anything to do with this or just a benign find. i can't ait to see the o2 go and hope all the good changes stay .
