By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.

I saw the hematologist today and he said that all the appropriate blood work was done in the hospital and I have none of the factors or clotting problems. So, we will never quite know why I got the PE. He said my pulmonologist was doing a good job. And he concurred that it's coumadin for life unless something happens I can't take coumadin and then there is another route, but I couldn't understand what he said. So, that is good news that I don't have one more problem. And my kids don't have to worry.

So if they can't find a cause then it's coumadin for life? My hospital doc blamed the birth control pill right away but my family doctor isn't so sure. That's why he's sending me to a hematologist, something the hospital doc failed to do. That's great though that your kids don't need to worry.

In my case. But in reality I have had 3 blood clots. Usually on two, it's coumadin for life. And if it keeps me from getting another clot, I will do it. Alive and bruising easier and going for the blood work (which gets longer once you stabilize), or dying from a clot....I'll take alive anytime.

I just had my 2nd P.E and now there waiting on my lab to come back to see if i have a clotting issue. But sitting for long periods of time can also cuase a clot it's common in truck drivers.

so if it's caused by sitting for long periods of time, how do they prove that? Just because you sat doesn't mean it caused them. I guess they have to rule everything else out.

For a lot of people, yes, two clotting events means warfarin for life. Me, I fought to come off after my second DVT because I was pretty convinced it was the result of progesterone-only BC.

Four months later, multiple bilateral PEs. I was more than happy to stay on the warfarin at that point. Three clotting events is three too many.
