By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.

It has been one year since my 2nd PE and 1 year since I found this site.
Although I do not post often it has been hugely helpful to read the various discussions. Quite often someone will be experiening what I have been questioning.
I had my first PE when pregnant with my fifth child in 2008 and thought that the pregnancy was the cause. the doctors also assumed this. I was 8 weeks along and went on clexane and oxygen for the remainder of that pregnancy.
Last November I went to the doctor because I was very short of breath and had some chest pain. strangely , i did not assume a PE. GP did a d-dimer then when results came through a few hours later sent me to emergency for a VQ scan....Another massive PE with small clots scattering the rest of my lungs! It was an incredible shock but I was also incredibly lucky. Had I not gone to the dr things would be very different.
So here I am 1 year later living life and enjoying my family. I am now a 'lifer' on warfarin. I have protein s deficiency. I still have some health issues but am generally a glass half full kind of a person.
I feel incredibly blessed to still be here with my beautiful family.

I had clexane injections during the pregnancy and then for three months after the birth. I didn't take any anticoagulants after that.
I developed the 2nd clot 3 years later and am now on warfarin for life.
I had a fair bit of pain after both clotting episodes. It takes a while for the body to recover in my experience.
I am four months out.. and I feel so fortunate. Like yourself, my PE could have had a very different ending.
As for the coumadin? I don't like it, and I hope to get off of it after the risk factors testing. But if I don't? I can "live" with that!
