Hi, my aunt had a filter for surgery. She had a history of superficial clots so they did it as a precaution.

I have a permanent filter so I can't speak to pain during removal but as far as insertion, I didn't feel anything and it seemed like it was a quick procedure. I was lightly sedated during it.

I have heard of people having filters for surgery only also, and there are plenty of people I've seen come through this group who have had temporary filters removed.

Like rmb, I have a permanent filter as well, but insertion wasn't painful or anything, and I'd guess whatever other surgery you're having is going to be a bigger deal than the filter insertion.

I do have friends who had filters removed, and they've said it wasn't any big deal either, just because of the light sedation you'll probably end up sleeping the day away.

I have a temporary filter. They were planning on removing it and I went in to have it removed however, when they took the X-ray to see placement I had a clot in my filter so they never did remove it.

It was not painful just very uncomfortable.
When they inserted it they inserted it into my femoral vein and when they went to take it out they went into my jugular vein.
