By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.
Hi guys.. just a few things playing on my mind that I was wondering if anyone had any experience of.
- Firstly, the last couple of weeks I've been noticing a sound in my ears.. especially when trying to get to sleep. Kind of like hearing a muffled version of your own heart-beat but through your ears. Almost a pulsing sort of sound. Its very irritating and nothing seems to shake it!
- Secondly.. I've finally (hurrah!) started work again this week and have noticed that the leg that I have been having trouble with (knee injury and foot drop) has been twinging and aching and just generally hurting every now and again.. when I'm at work I'm sat down mainly but up and about every half hour or so, but when I get home and take my shoes off my ankle and foot is swollen! Not as much as it was when It was first injured, but enough to be annoying!
- Thirdly, this is one for the ladies, last week saw my second period on warfarin. I was expecting it to be the same as the first, incredibly almost unbearably heavy.. bad cramps etc. Instead I had two days of small smears, no proper flow.. followed by another day of even smaller smears.. and nothing else! My boyfriend is predisposed to worry about such things, especially as I'm not allowed oral B/C at the moment. So I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone else.

I can't speak about the leg twinging and such. But i did experience a weird rushing heartbush whooshing noise in my ears whenever my INR was seriously high or I was very fatigued. I'm not sure how common that is, but it happened to me.
I had awful periods the entire time i was on warfarin, so I don't know what normal is for that. That being said now that i'm 6 months post warfarin I only have my period about every 2 and half to 3 months. I worried too at first not being on BC pills anymore, but for whatever reason it seems to be what my body has decided to do. I once had a period like you're describing or rather a "non period" man years prior to my PE and i turned out to be preggo with my eldest child. I would say don't stress about it, but if you don't get another normal period later on, get it checked out.

For the swelling, please ask your medical advisors about wearing compression socks, and soon. Not only to they bring down the swelling, but for other reasons they are especially recommended in the first two years after a VTE. Prolonged sitting, as necessitated for work, is an especially unsuitable posture. Compression socks provide a needed mitigation.
As to the swelling, wear compression socks as more2be said. I too tore ligaments in my knee and still have swelling off and on and the compression socks help a lot.
Ok the period thing, I used to have regular medium periods before the Coumadin but as soon as the coumadin was started I have had really heavy and longer periods. However, my period last week was very light and only lasted 3 days which totally shocked me. I'm not sure what's up with that really as it's been my first light period on coumadin. Bodies can be strange sometimes for sure.

When I stopped the pill, (in the hospital) I had a very light flow. It was 6 weeks before I had a period again. (I'm in my mid 40's so I was thinking .....hoping....that I was done. ) No such luck, the next two have been very heavy. I'm not cramping more than I did before, but it like I have a faucet that has been turned on. . (YUCK)
As for the period.....I didn't have one for two months and then it finally came but wasn't really that heavy. My doctor said that stress can play a big factor and being on a new medication is an adjustment to our system. My primary care told me to relax....easier said than done, ha.
I have had white noise/buzzing in both ears (have it now actually) that I know I never had before my PEs. To me it is like when you go to watch a band play and it is really loud and when you come out even though the music has stopped your head is still ringing. I asked my doctor at one time and he said it was because of my high blood pressure but I know that my BP is OK now so why the continued noises in my head? It's not a problem in the big scheme of things but it can be annoying sometimes especially when I'm trying to sleep.
