Pulmonary Embolism Support Group
By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.
I will say, individuals should seriously think twice about
using/requesting medications such as these. There are the individuals who can use them without serious side effects, however; I think physicians should perhaps consider testing individuals for clotting factors prior to prescribing. Clotting factor testing may (might) lower the incidence of death with the use of birth control medications since synthetic hormones (such as estrogen) do increase clotting factors. Medications such as birth control given to a individual who have a clotting problem such as Factor V, your increasing the chances of death, tenfold.
My first blood clot was at the age of 18 years, my second one 14 years later. My first clot was THOUGHT to have been caused from Ortho Tri-cyclen...a popular birth control in the late 1990's, however; since my second clot, it has been found that I have a clotting problem.
It is VITAL to know your family history before or while using any medication. Medications are designed to change the way the body reacts, as in this case stopping the release of an ovum and prevent pregnancy. To do this, you have to use a synthetic hormone, one that increases the chances of clotting. This is the same for HRTT for menopausal women.
Due to the cost of clotting testing and insurance companies, I understand the restrictions put on physicians. Also, why screen someone who may or may not have problems?
Because of my own personal experience with birth control, I am stressing abstainence in my children I have told them (my children) if for any reason they can not wait, they had better be using a condom or be prepared to grow up quickly.
