By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.

Back pain

Hi- I have posted in the dvt group in the past, but never in here because my PE symptoms have always been pretty mild. I was diagnosed with a dvt and several small pes a couple days after my c section in April. I’ve been off blood thinners for awhile and over a month ago a repeat ct scan confirmed no more pes in chest. The past week I’ve been having sharp back pain on the right side just below the shoulder that comes and goes and occasionally aches. It feels like it is deep almost past the ribs. I’m obviously concerned about another PE but my doctors all say my risk is extremely low. I have been lugging around my new baby and his car seat which may have just strained my back but was wondering if others could share what their back or chest pain felt like with their PEs? When I was diagnosed my only real symptom was tachycardia at rest. Thanks in advance.

Well I can say I didn’t have chest pain until after I was diagnosed and it lasted on and off for about 3 months after diagnosis, and became more intermittent the next 3 months after that. The pain was sharp and stabbing, mostly in my upper chest either side and in my upper back and shoulder blades.

It could be a strain and too maybe if you are being hyper aware about your body (common after a PE) sort of heightens everything but I always think if it’s a new pain and concerning it doesn’t hurt to check in with your doc, for peace of mind.

Thank you! It sounds like my pain is a little further down. It is a little better today so I am going to wait until my check in with my pcp on Tuesday and I’ll ask her about it then. It could be I’m just hyper aware like you are saying. The pain definitely isn’t stopping me from doing anything. Thanks!

Mine feels like tightness across the chest, about a one inch area of pain and like I'm dying. Here's the kicker though, they aren't sure what's causing the pain. That location could be all kinds of things maybe even your gall bladder. Keep notes of when you get the pain, what you were doing, what you ate, if anything makes it feel better, any other symptoms like shortness of breath or fever to show your doctor.

I had sharp pain on and off about 6 weeks after bilateral PE. It eventually went away

    We all have 24 hours in a day.  How we spend these hours is important.  Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do.  Gonna have to work on that.Your turn.  Tell me another truth.
