This is an interesting topic because for me there were so many differing opinions as to what is safe/best. I can't say I have had experience with the mini pill, but like you I was told strictly no more pill.

I was also told Implanon (implant in your arm) would be ok, mini pill would be ok, IUD, copper IUD... you name it. And each one was also considered not safe by differing professionals lol. It was so confusing. At one point it was agreed that it would be best if I have nothing at all and my husband have a vasectomy. In the end, on the one billionth time to try get a definitive answer I was happy to find a doctor at the hospital who was confident a IUD would be perfect. Anyone else find this problem?

The mini pill doesn't have any estrogen, so its progesterone only. It builds up mucus or something near the cervix and prevents implantation so you can't really control your period like you can with the regular pill. I did some research and I'm not impressed, although I took one yesterday. My doc has recommended Merena (sp) IUD over the copper IUD. The shots he said causes weight gain, about 5 per year, so I nixed that. I have never had a child, so the biggest risk with Mirena is that b/c i haven't had children, it may hurt to put in and there is a 10 percent chance my body would expel it. Those risks aren't the same if you have kids. The mini pill was just suppose to be temporary. Try it, and in the meantime, wait for Mirena to come in. MIrena is $800 and my insurance doesn't cover it.

I personally won't use any hormone based BC, but that's my decision. My OBGYN was ok with the Mirena , but not with the mini pill. I opted for neither and went with the paragard IUD (coppper IUD).

I guess I don't get why not just use condoms for those couple of months until your MIrena comes in, if you have concerned about the min pill. I hated condoms but used them until I figured out which BC route I was going to go in.

My hematologist told me that if any of the manufacture packaging stated a risk for clots that I was never to take it...EVER. I was on seasonale too when I had my PE and was told no pill anymore. I have had my kids and am comfortable using other birth control methods, but I sure do miss the regulation that I got from the pill. I have my period every 21-25 days and heavy because of the coumadin. I just went off the coumadin and it is a little nerve wracking, but I'm hopeful. I'm not considering the pill as an option anymore because when it comes down to it, my kids need their mom more than I need the convenience.

Four years after my first DVT, I was talked into the mini-pill by an OB/GYN I was seeing. Five weeks later, I had a second DVT. At that point, I was told no more hormones, ever.

So no shots, no implants, no nothing. Back to the 1940s in terms of birth control options.

I had a copper IUD put in. It was painful to insert (take some Tylenol before you go and have a driver with you, just in case) but we found out later that was because I only have half a uterus. Hard to put an IUD designed for a triangle space into a space shaped like a banana! Anyway ...

Loved the IUD! Made life so much easier in so many ways. I would highly recommend it. And, just so you know, I've never had kids either and won't.

I think the upshot with BC is deciding what YOU are comfortable with. For me personally, I won't go near anything with hormones at all, no matter what hormones or where in my body they will be. But, that is what I am comfortable with. There are others on here who are fine with the mini-pill or the hormone IUD. You have to take the info from your doctors and make your own decision.

Ultimately, no doctor can guarantee that any choice will be 100% safe. If they say that, they're lying. Just like with anything, you have to decide what you are comfortable with -- and what risks you are comfortable taking -- and then do what you want.

This is very interesting. I had started BI progestrone 2 1/2 months before having my PE. My Dr. assured me the PE was not caused by the progesterone.

I Googled it all over the internet and it is supposed to be safe.

But now I am wondering after reading these posts.

Personally, I've made the choice to never use hormones again.

My PC, said no hormones. the gyn said the mini pill would be OK... I was told replacement hormones would be OK. (I'm getting to that age). My PC has been right about almost everything to do with the PE, so I'm sticking to the no hormones at all. I'll deal with the hot flashes, etc when they start.

I was told that my PE was caused by my birth control (generic of Yaz, containing drospirenone - a synthetic form of progesterone), too. They told me in the ER that should I ever choose birth control pills again I could only have a vey low estrogen and progesterone type.

To which my response was, "No thank you; I will never take another birth control pill again."
