By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.
On the 28th I was admitted with my 4th set of PEs. They ran a heparin drip for 4 days until they were sure my INR was theraputic again. Before I left the hospital I developed a pulled muscle in my right side from the hospital bed. I came home Friday. Saturday night, I noticed in the mirror a large bruise covering my abdominal from the right side of my belly button on around my back and about six inches in width. I went to the ER and the nurses there even watched the bruise increase in size. I was down 2 units of blood and a surgeon was called in. They stabilized me, gave me a transfusion and watch to make sure I was stable. I'm now on 2 weeks bed rest. The surgeon told me we avoided surgery this time and it will take some time to heal. So, 2-4 weeks no lifting or straining and then I need to continue to heal from the latest PEs.
They are stating the cause from the pulled muscle and the heparin...but I will be back on warfarin.
A scary time and again, makes you realize not to mess with this. The doctor told me that I could have bled out or gone into respiratory arrest from this had I not taken the bruise seriously.

wow! You ARE lucky!! So you weren't on coumadin when you had the PEs this time? Good thing you went to the ER. I never know if I should go or not, hem and haw around about it. This last time it was over calf pain and it turned out to be a DVT. I guess it is better to be safe and you are living proof of that!

I had similar from the celexane injections to the extent it still shows up on cts as a site of previous trauma. Great to read your story, goes to show injections need to be really closely monitored in hospital as they can have so many side effects.

I have been non coumadin the entire time. And STILL got a PE

Oh my goodness! Lynne, I'm so sorry you're having to go through all this. I'm glad you got to the ER when you did and I hope you start feeling better soon!

I meant ON warfarin. I did have a few weeks where my INR was all over the place, so it can take very little. Unfortunately, I'm one of those who have no apparent reason for the PEs. You just hate to start back from square one. I also attribute the possibility to the fact that I had other medical issues pop up and was not up and around like I should. I think moving is very important.
