My doctor ran some blood work to test my potassium and other levels since I've been on diamox for a year and my levels have never been checked. He threw in a thyroid panel cause I told him how hard I've been trying to lose weight and can't. As a child I had low thyroid (hypothyroid) but it corrected itself after a few years. So when he called and said my thyroid was off I thought oh finally an answer for not beings able to lose weight, then he goes it shows you are hyperthyroid. Seriously, I can't get the losing weight symptom of it!
Anyone else have problems with their thyroid in connection to PTC? Just curious if it is a random thing or another lovely symptom/consequence of this wonderful "gift" we've been given!

Having thryoid issues with IH is not unusual in fact I know there is a link between the two I read about it. I have Hypothyroidism and Hashimotos disease and I know a few other women on the boards have this as well. I know when they were trying to get my Levothyroxine (thyroid replacement hormone) right in the beginning I was bouncing between hyper and hypo which was so annoying but usually with hyper you can lose weight more easily so I'm not sure what is going on with you either. Maybe your metabolism is just stuck at the moment. Either way at least you have uncovered something that is easy to manage with just a simple pill. I have had it for 7 years now and just take my thyroid pill each morning, get my levels checked once a year and everything has been steady.

My thyroid has been low normal for many years - at least since 1991. I also have PCOS, which was diagnosed back in 1991. I've never had any treatment for it, and I know that now the docs prescribe Metformin for it. Frankly, I wish my thyroid would go just a little lower so they could put me on some thyroid meds - maybe it would give my metabolism a boost. Since I'm perimenopausal, it seems like my metabolism has tanked, and I can put on weight like crazy... But then again, since my body is generally not fond of meds, it would be just my luck that it doesn't work without major side effects (LOL).

I'm very familiar with HYPOthyroidism as I had it when I was a kid. My 11yr old has it, as do my mom, aunt and my grandmother when she was alive. But I was so baffled when the doctor said I have HYPERthyroidism. One common symptom of hyper is drastic weight loss but for me it takes weeks of working out and eating nothing but healthy food to even lose one pound. It just puzzled me so much by the diagnosis. I knew there was/might be a connection between hypo and PTC but was curious if there might be for hyper!

I actually had a left hemithyroidectomy in march of 2011 and I do not take meds for the lacking thyroid. I had a mass the size of a golf ball on my thyroid so they took out my left side. I wasn't dx with PTC till 9 weeks ago. Don't think mine were related.

I also have hypothyroidism. I was diagnosed 1 Dec and started 100mg of Levothyroxine, by the end of the Dec I felt ill and had lots of migraines with all sorts of head pains and sensations. The symptoms got worse and progressed untill I lost my eyesight about 95% and had constant headaches, in Aug of that year I was diagnosed with IH.

I definately think there is a connection but in my case I think it was thyroid first then IH. My consultant did say it's not been proven but they think there is a connection, mainly with the Thyroxine medication.

When I was a natural hyper, I could never gain weight despite my unhealthy eating habits. After the Iodine therapy, when my thyroids were permanently shut down, I turned into a hypo. With the hormone replacement, I can either be hyper or hypo, but I completely lost my ability to lose weight, despite trying hard to reach an ideal weight.
