You and I , we know, are somewhat alike in our IH. I have had what you describe as well and I think that if my pain (just as you described) were to continue, I would go to the ER but it doesnt continue. It only lasts for 10 seconds at the most. I kind of think it has to do with my transverse sinuses being narrow. I came to this conclusion when I was having my cerebral angiogram and they were scoping that area, I remember having the same kind of pain when I was on the table during the procedure. Maybe the pain is from a temporary fleeting blockage in the sinus draining the CSF fluid. Have you ever been told yours are narrowed ? Mine are not narrowed enought to where they would do anything about it. Some docs think it causes IIH and some docs think it happens because of the IH. May have nothing to do with your issue , just sharing mine . Hope you start feeling better soon!

I have had this within the past week, Its not so much pressure but its a sharp electricial type pain that makes my face draw up. Its only on my right side and starts from behind my ear and runs back through my neck and up almost to my forehead!
I' m glad I'm not the only one I was getting worried on this one! I thought it might have something to do with my clot. but my pain meds make it go away

And Fayrae I just read yours lol my transverse sinuses are narrowed too, 50-60 percent on each side. maybe this is whats causing it???

I used to get this really bad...I would cringe and say OUCH !!!! Just feels like you are getting an electric shock in your head. MY stroke Neuro explains it like the blood vessells are actually stretching to handle the added pressure. And that stretching is what I was feeling. Now that the blood flow has improved I no longer have that pain. I also have narrowed or blocked transverse sinuses. I had a stent placed in Sept. 2008. Paula
P.S. My new Dr's say they would never have put the stent in. It did not help the pressure, but it did stop the awful whoosing, so I would do it again.

My new Neuro at UCLA have shown me on the MRV's of my head that my brain is actually making new pathway for the blood to flow and the circulation in my head is getting better than it was three years ago.

Jt, I get this same thing. I actually sound a lot like you! I get the headaches but they aren't completely so horrible that it takes over my day. I can take advil and I get some relief. I am told that my optic nerves are only "slightly" swollen. I have not lost any vision and the headaches are almost completely gone. I only had maybe 1 or 2 a week. They were painful especially when i stood up or bent down. I do have a lot of visual disturbances though such as my vision is very jittery. Everything almost looks like it is moving or shaking if that makes sense. Anyway! I do get that stabbing pain. Mine is usually right behind my eyes though. I hate it!

yes your transverse sinuses would had shown if they were narrowed with the MRI/MRA/MRVs.
Have you had any other tests to rule out everything?

Just the MRI, MRV and initial testing of spinal fluid from the lumbar puncture. Nothing came back abnormal, and everything pointed to an idiopathic diagnosis.

Thats good, then if nothing else is showing up.
My MRI/MRA and MRV all showed stenosis (narrowing) which led them to do another test which is the cerebral angiogram.
And thats how they found the clot (s) and they really couldn't see that, they said they knew it was clotted because there was blood where it wasn't suppose to be and my blood was flowing backwards, along with the stenosis.

I did fall into the typical category for idiopathec IH, ( weight gain, hormone birth control, and had recently taken doxycycline) but I never got paps, just the severe headaches. And opening pressure was greater than 50, the first time.

But if your nervous be persistent with them, my first neuro actually thanked me for pushing them to do the extra tests. Then after diagnosis I was referred to another who knew more what to do about my situation.

My MRI/MRV didn't show my sinus narrowing. Only the angiogram did ......

Neither did my CT or Ct Angiogram .
